  • Mpg problem

Hey all, any input would be helpful.

I got an 03 roadstar 1600 silver edition. It runs great but i average 28 mpg. It has Vance and hines longshots with nothing done to them. It has oem airbox with clean filter, new plugs with proper gap. The valve clearance is good. I just rebuilt the carb and put oem jets in it ( the person before me had put 175 main in and it ran very rich). The bike has 28k on it.

I get around 28 mpg... just rebuilt the carb yesterday and went for a long ride this morning and thats what I got. I was getting similar before changing the jets. I am a pretty conservative rider, I didn't go above 70 this morning and I hardly do when I ride. I am heavy rider at 300lb. I got a 21in windshield on it and no luggage. The only thing I didn't check when I did the carb yesterday was if the needle for the float was stock or if it had much wear ( I just cleaned it off and stuck it back in). Would the needle not seating cause a big mpg problem? I see people post that they can get high 30s 2 up, so am I in the wrong thinking I should be getting better mpg?

You may just need to adjust your PMS, if you're not familiar with that, check out the carb tuning articles in the Tech Section. If you haven't already done so, you may also want to invest in a Baron's Jet Kit.

When you say stock jetting do you still have a stock needle? Or an adjustable needle? If it is an adjustable needle what groove is the clip in?

Doc, the PMS is set to 2 1/2 turns out from being seated.

Dave, it was an adjustable needle and the clip was on the 2nd to last groove if you were holding it needle down.

I'm pretty new to dealing with carburetors so sorry if i miss things or my terms are off

How many grooves the needles have depends on what brand needle. It should be in the 4th groove down from the flat with 1 silver washer and a plastic spacer under the clip end regardless of brand. If the needle has 6 grooves and you were in the 2nd to last groove that would be the 5th groove down and would be the problem.

Dave, do you think the 175 jet is a little rich?

Duke It is if it is a Mikuni main jet. he said that is what "Was" in it and he went back to a stock size. That would be a 165 Mikuni main jet.

Davej, thank you. I'll pull it back apart tomorrow and see how many grooves are on the needle and adjust it if need be.

Hey Dave, I can't find it on the old site, but isn't there a "poor man's BAK" mod that some people have done by cutting holes in the back of the stock air cleaner? Running aftermarket pipes with the stock air cleaner is like running with your hand over your mouth. It will definitely cause him to run richer and it's restricting free power gains.

I just had a wild hair up my ass while BBQing and pulled the needle out, there are 6 groves, the set washer was set to the 5th, I moved it to the 4th. Also, I watched a video on YouTube of a guy dismantling a carb for an 02, there was a spring under the plastic tab the sits on the needle... my carb didn't have that spring... maybe therein lies the problem

yes it was drilling a couple holes in the back edge of the airbox. I don't remember the size but it was around 1 1/2 inch holes with a hole saw.
