    to keep it short i have owned a 2004 xv1700a for a little less than a month. on the ride home the clutch never slipped (1.5 hrs). the next day she began to slip but only during the first 20 miles. (bike was stone cold when i picked it up) I'm not new to riding but i still have never had one fail... ever. when the bike is cold the clutch slips so bad if you accelerate even in 2nd or possibly 1st hard you can easily feel the loss, but once the bike is warmed up and the oil gets hot there is little to no clutch slippage. the bike acts the same way every time so i take it real easy for the first 30 minutes or so and after she will take some serious abuse. (same way every time and ive put well over 1000 miles on it in the last few weeks) sounds to me like a clutch spring problem and the thinner oil allows for tighter clearances between the plates but i wanted to get a second opinion.. i plan on a barnet pressure plate conversion and new friction plates and steels but i have seen a lot of posts saying only to use the oem plates from yamaha. why is this and if necessary where do i even get oem plates at a time like this?

    make sure the clutch is adjusted properly and change the oil. Make sure that you use a motorcycle specific oil. the last time it was changed car motor oil may have been used.
    now to answer the question about disc and plates. Some members seem to think that OEM is best even though I have never heard of an issue with aftermarket plates in the 11 years I have been a member here. A barnett kit would be just fine IMO.

      i made the dealer change the oil and he did use the appropriate type but i didnt like the zzdp levels with that oil 900 ish so i changed it again after 350 miles to mobil1 vtwin.

      thanks for the response bud, i just wanna make sure b4 i pull the trigger

        If the dealer changed the oil it should be the correct oil. Just pull the trigger and get the Barnett installed.

          they did change the oil but i can say with certainty it was not the correct oil which is why i changed it. it was motorcycle oil made for wet clutch systems but it was a low zddp oil.

            My comment about the correct oil was referring to motorcycle specific not ZDDP. I guess if you want oil with a specific zddp level in it you should be specific with the dealer when you drop it off for the oil change.
