  • Hose connection

Hey fellas, I went in to replace a cracked intake manifold and found this hose was disconnected, only place I can see it going is airbox but wanted to confirm

It is a vent. I have mine routed below the frame. Some add a filter or crankcase vent valve. It originally goes on the airbox.

Goes to the back of the air box and dumps crank case fumes and excess oil into air box. Most folks here re route it to it’s own small filter to keep the intake filter cleaner.

I turn the hose end for end so the curved end connects to the valve cover. That directs the straight end of the hose to up and under the fuel tank, I put a breather filter on the end of it. Now any excess oil from the crankcase fumes that gets into the hose drains back into the engine instead of on the side of the engine or on the ground.

Same here. And use one of these on the end of the tube up underneath the fuel tank by the ignition switch.

That is the same filter I have on mine

Not to state the obvious but gonna anyway. If you are going to relocate the hose, be sure to plug the hole on the air filter cover.
Also, since the hose was already disconnected, be sure to check and clean the air box.

Question for those who have done the vent under tank with the Purelator filter. Do you ever have any issues with the smell and or oil residue? What about the sound? Can you hear air puffing?

I’ve had some smell in the past, but none lately. And only when idling. No sound that I can tell over the sucking of that big intake.

I have also had a little smell on very rare occasions and only after highway rides for a second or 2. The couple times that I have had that faint smell hasn't been an issue once i remember what it's from. Just like shores said no sound that I can hear.

I found when I first removed from the stock air box and hosed to below the frame, was an oily few drips or so upon stopping the bike. After a few rides it has been nothing but seems water droplets or condensation coming out of vent. Not sure after seeing this I want to hose up frame and have drain back to top of rear cylinder. My old XS 650 would blow by oil if over filled thru this same style vent. Not sure if the Roadstar would act the same way. Never filled with anymore than 4 litres of oil. JC

Shouldn't really be any water condensation coming out in the warm weather after riding to operating temp. If there is it wouldn't stay in the hose anyway it would be vapor and still flow out of the hose. I have worked on a couple that have had the hose routed down towards the ground and the bottom side and back of the engine and bike was an oily mess.

I have mine routed down by the shift lever on the left hand side. [I did it, because that way, the hose is almost invisible when routed properly.] I do get some oil residue around the left side floorboard mount, but nothing serious. I just wipe it off whenever I wash the bike. I suppose having the filter mounted below the motor allows for more oil accumulation, vs. above. In fact, come to think of it, when the breather is mounted above the motor, the excess oil likely drains back into the motor. [Something to consider.] The sound is the main reason I went low this time, I had it above on my 1600, and I could hear it pretty clearly. But then I have a batwing, which acts to direct all those engine noises, etc., back at you. I think the smell I'm getting is from the oil additive I used to break in my lifters. I plan to change the oil soon, hopefully that will eliminate the smell, or at least make it less intense.

I described it this way on a vent thread a couple of years ago:

There is a definite chuffing sound coming from under the tank now that I really only hear at idle. Sounds like a hyperactive Chihuahua panting. Cute, I suppose, but may take some getting used to. Still, if it is a choice between a fine oil mist on the side of my bike or the Chihuahua, I'll take the Chihuahua.

Two years later, I still hear it but it just sounds normal now.

Hey davej or Shores . Do you have pictures please? I want to do mine. Thank you! Was thinking of installing a new hose from the outlet, go under the fuel tank and down to the rear and bottom.

I'm unable to post pictures but I just removed the tank and used a wire tie to secure the filter right behind the ignition switch on top of the frame. Then run a hose from the filter down the spine of the frame 2 the rear valve cover port.
