  • Battery good, starter "clicks" '99 Roadstar

Hello, I recently relocated to an area in FL with no bike mechanic and the closest Yamaha dealer roughly 2 hrs away.... I have been riding to work daily, but not much more riding recently. Yesterday I went to start it and it turned over several times but wouldn't fire, then nothing. Last evening I removed and checked the battery and it's fine. Reinstalled battery this morning, and lights etc all work fine, but starter only clicks. Met a guy in town who can install new starter, but before I order one on Amazon, I wanted to see if anyone here has anything else I should be looking at? I am NOT very mechanically inclined, but can confirm bike in neutral, emergency stop switch not engaged, etc.... Any help/ideas will be appreciated. I am hoping it is the starter, as paying this guy some $ and beer will be a LOT less than renting a trailer to get it to Panama City or Talahassee!! Thanks everyone!!!

(DO THIS FIRST) You didn't say how you checked the battery. It has to be tested under load. Take the battery to an auto parts store and have it tested.
If it's ok, try jumping or bump starting the bike. Then measure the voltage being applied to the battery from the charging system. It should be over 14V.
You might also hook up a charger and let it run over night.

You also don't mention how far away from work you are. More than a few miles should be enough to recharge the battery.

I really doubt that it's the starter.

BTW, from Dallas. If you haven't already, please completely fill out your profile (including the personal information). It helps us to know about your bike, give better advice and maybe get help from someone in your area.
    Peace,
Baron Wilhelm Gustav von Schmidt III

How old is the battery? Might have to do a load test to make sure there aren't any weak or bad cells in battery. Lights and horn will still work but heavy load from trying to start will weaken it quickly. The pervious owner of my roadie sId he purchased a new battery every year because of the high torque of the engine. But since I picked up a little bit higher cca battery and a batt tender mine has been pretty strong for the 2 yrs I've had it. Maybe something to ck.

check and clean all battery connections, make sure the battery has full charge then check the voltage as you push the starter button. If it drops below 10 volts the battery is bad.

          from Solon, IA.

With a little patience and some testing you can take care of this matter yourself (if you'd like to attempt it). Lots of knowledge here to help you along the way. Just take your time and ask plenty of questions. You got this!

Don't just throw money at it, diagnose the problem. It's likely very simple. Also don't assume that a small trickle charger will put a good charge on the battery. Put it on a serious auto battery charger. Like others said, take the battery to an auto store and have them load tested.

All, thanks so far for the responses. I neglected to say that I did take the battery to auto parts store, and they said it's fine. I'll keep plugging away, but based on responses so far I'm not going to order a new starter. Thanks again all!!!

Two things you’ll hear ‘click’ when the starter button is pushed. One is the decompression solenoid behind the cam chest and the other is the starter’s relay behind the side cover, but not the starter.

A failed starter relay will click, but not make actual contact internally to complete the circuit to turn the starter motor to crank the engine over.

One way to test it is to bridge the two lugs with a screwdriver to see if the starter will turn.

Keep this in mind if the battery checks out but something still ‘just clicks’.

Do you have a volt meter or a 12v test light? Have you confirmed that you have voltage at the starter when you push the start button? There is nothing on the starter that would click when trying to start. my guess is that if you do some electrical test on the starter relay you are gonna find that the relay is bad. Very common problem on these bikes. You should have voltage on both cable lugs on the relay while pushing the start button. If you only have voltage on 1 side (the battery side) when pushing the starter button then the relay is bad. You can also jump across the 2 lugs on the relay with a screwdriver with the bike in neutral. If the bike turns over then you have eliminated the starter and cable connections. That test also verifies the relay as the issue.

if you do end up needing a starter relay, only use a OEM one the cheap ones from ebay and Amazon are well known to fail right out of the box or shortly thereafter, sometimes doing other damage on the way out.

What in the heck does "high torque of [an] engine" have to do with a battery going bad every year? Answer: Nothing.

I guess he thought that having a hi-torque starter would go through batteries quickly. Wasn't to concerned about tht when I brought the bike because I had installed a hi-torque starter on my truck and it doesn't have any effect on battery life. Maybe he was thinking hi compression engine.... possible.

If the starter is the problem they are usually easy to fix , the brush plate can crack and fail .and or need good cleaning
