  • 2003 Roadstar Silverado with Vance and Hines pipes.

    Hello,
I recently purchased a 2003 Road Star Silverado with vance and hines straight pipes. I think it is lean and am unsure if it is jetted or not. I recently changed all the fluids, air filter and spark plugs and Click image for larger version

ID:	83793 while doing that I noticed the intake was cracked in quite a few places. I sprayed carb cleaner in the affected area and the idle slowed down and it almost died. I attached a picture of the plugs and the lean looking ones are the rear cylinder. I plan I replacing the intake and jetting the carb. Should I wait till the intake is replaced before jetting or do you think it would be best to do it all at once? Thanks for the help as I am new to these bikes.

I am no guru, but I always live by “fix one thing at a time” especially when it comes to something like carb jetting.

I would fix the cracked intake and see and see how things look after that before rejetting.

Replace intake clean and jet according to "our" info here not jet kit manufacturer. Then put in new plugs...run it and dial in pms then pull plugs and inspect

Does it have an aftermarket air cleaner on it? Both Padre and Lug Nut are correct here with what to do. If you're not too keen on re-jetting at this point I would think that Padre's suggestion would definitely help. I would also check the jetting just to see what you have and let us know here before you do any re-jetting. Just MHO.
          BTW from Iowa.

Your leak must be a small leak. the plugs on the right in the pic look good. I would replace the intake and take note of the jetting sizes (main jet and pilot jet) along with the needle clip groove location (what groove the clip is in) while you have the carb off. From the look of the front plugs I think you will find that it was properly jetted. The only other thing I will add is that if you find a stock size #35 Mikuni pilot jet in it you will benefit by replacing it with a mikuni 37.5. If you determine that it has a dynojet 37.5 in it replace that with a Mikuni 37.5. The dynojet 37.5 flows the same amount of fuel as the stock Mikuni 35. A Mikuni pilot jet will have a symbol on the side that is a box inside a box. the dynojet jet won't have that symbol.

DaveJ, I am going to replace the intake this weekend and I will pull the carb apart while it’s off and let you guys know. The person I bought the bike from put less than 300 miles on it in about 6 years so it idled a lot as it was started up once a month or so. Thank you for the info.

Stock air filter and the only jet I see that has a marking is 165. The other two, longer with multiple holes are unmarked. The one looks like it doesn’t even have a hole in it. Circled in yellow is marked 165 and the one marked in green looks like it doesn’t even have a hole through it.

Mikuni jets are marked with a square.

The 'nearly no miles' with regular idling is likely to be a big part of your problem.
I'd do a shock treatment with Seafoam and take it for a good long ride on the Interstate.

By shock treatment, I mean an entire can of Seafoam in a tank of fresh 87 octane fuel.
Use only fresh gas and NOT premium gas.
The Roadstar engine is not a good place to burn high octane fuel.
It causes problems more often than not - use the search function here to see why.

One of the things that people do to really crud up their carbs is to start the bike in storage, especially never running it over a couple thousands RPM for any amount of time.
Blub-blub-blub does a lot more harm than good, especially in the cold. Condensation really screws up carbs, fuel and electrical stuff.
