  • Clutch locked up?

My 2000 RS been sitting for 5 years, she still starts, but when I release the clutch in gear she dies... like my clutch locked up? Stuck? Not sure how to describe it.. any ideas?

    from California.

Make sure your kickstand is not down. They have an automatic kill switch to prevent you from putting the bike in gear when it's down. Also, when the bike sits for a long time, the plates can stick together; put the bike in 5th gear with the motor off and rock it backwards a couple times to free the plates. Lastly, check the adjustment on the clutch cable to make sure the clutch is disengaging when you pull the lever in.

Yep...plates stuck together. Can put in gear and roll to break them free. After you get it free and ride it....throw some seafoam in the oil....ride for 20 miles...and then change the oil and filter!

Are you saying that you can start the bike, pull the clutch in, drop it into first gear and there’s no problem until you start releasing the clutch to get rolling that the engine dies (stalls out), as in just shuts off, or lugs down and stops?

Thats what I got from the description.

If that’s the case a faulty side stand switch would kill the engine the moment you dropped it into first.

Will the bike even roll in neutral?

Also change the oil immediately. Then let the engine warm up very well, almost hot before putting it in gear.

Yeah, I get side stand switch out of the description. It's easy to take the switch off down by the kick stand, 2 small screws to open the switch then wipe it out and scrape the contacts with your pocket knife, put ever so slight smear of dielectric grease on contacts then wipe most of it off and re-assemble the switch and it should give you years more service.

He didn't say it dies when he puts it in gear (side stand switch or neutral switch), he said it dies when he tries to engage the clutch.
"but when I release the clutch in gear she dies."

Exactly! Shore's had the best advice. Let the oil get good and hot before putting it in gear. When you put in it in gear, release the clutch lever with a good amount of throttle. Do this as many times as needed until the clutch finally breaks loose. It will at some point, but the key is to get the oil good and hot first.
And of course to continue with Shores advice, once it breaks loose, ride it for a little bit, then promptly change the oil.

Dropping the bike into gear with stuck clutch plates would jerk the bike right out from under him.

I got that the bike would only stall after engaging the clutch after it was in gear.

Until he gets his butt back on here and answers a few more questions, we’re chasing our tails.

                    YES! Thank you Bikerron!
I Had sticking clutch plates just last summer & that's Exactly what happens when you put it in gear. Except mine didn't jerk so hard as to jump out from under me. It Did screech the rear tire tho!

“My 2000 RS been sitting for 5 years,”

But, clutch plates sitting for that long may yield a real good jerk.

My 2006 sat for 2-1/2 years on the showroom floor before I bought it.
Started several times but never moved under it's own power the whole time it sat there.
When I bought it, it fired right up & as soon as I tried to put it in gear it stalled.
The mechanic in the shop took it in back, popped the clutch pack out & cleaned everything up. worked like a charm.
                  Never had a problem since.

Pardon the ignorant question, but why replace the oil immediately after freeing up the clutch?
