I know i'm late to the party here but a couple things come to mind:

    1) Could be an air leak in the manifold or a related system. I see you're in Vegas, that dry desert heat can play hell on soft components like an intake boots, hoses, etc., causing them to crack and leak. Or possibly a loose injector, or if a manifold was ever removed, it's no longer sealing properly. [this is common when they're removed] Also any chance this is a California bike? if so, it has extra emissions components that could also crack and leak, causing a problem. With a leak, every time you twist the throttle, you're sucking in more air than is needed for the amount of fuel the injectors are squirting, and you bog down. Remove the tank and give all the soft bits a good close visual inspection. Bend and squeeze hoses to see if they're hard or cracked.

    2) A bike that old, with that few miles, has sat... A lot... Gasoline does not keep well, it begins to break down and form varnish that settles to the bottom of the tank. Also water, from condensation or bad gas from a station, can form inside the tank. Now you have "layers" of different substances kind of like a bottle of salad dressing. As you ride along, you're stirring up all that crap and it starts to get sucked in to the fuel pick up, clogging the screen / filter, the pump, and eventually the injectors. If you're lucky it's just water. When you go easy you only suck gasoline, but as you twist the throttle it sucks harder, you start sucking in that water.

The solution for bad gas, water or varnish are all the same. DRAIN the tank, possibly from #25 below, then remove the pump #22, and inspect the pick up screen/filter on the pump. This will give you a good idea what's been happening. If you find any crap in the tank, filter, pickup, etc. clean everything well then reassemble, fill the tank completely with new fresh fuel, and like Shores said, pour in a *good* dose of Seafoam. If you find crap in the tank, go with a strong mixture of half a can to a full tank of gas. You'll smoke a lot but that's the Seafoam doing it's job and it will help clean everything out.

If you need a new pump, you can get one here for $442, and do it yourself. Also call our site sponsor, Rock River Power Sports, and tell them you're a Road Star Clinic member. They may be able to give you an even better deal. Scroll to the bottom of the page for their info.

BTW, if you haven't already, now would be a good time to inspect and replace the spark plugs and air filter if necessary.

    Best of luck.
