  • Need help

    Ok so I ride a 2001 r* 1600. Was out of commission for a while. When I finally got it back to running condition(So I thought) it had carb issues. I have pulled, cleaned, and replaced the carb. Now when it starts it idles very rough for a clue of seconds the back fires and dies. Any help on what to check next would be great.

    What is your location? Do you know the condition of the fuel pump? You say it's a 2001.

      I would start with fuel flow. Disconnect line at the carb, put a finger over the line, turn key on. If you get pressure, it's probably the carb. If not, check back up the line (fuel filter, pump, petcock.

        Jeaston I'm in Texas the pump is working. It's getting file to the carb.

        Gerry seems to be getting plenty of fuel.

          Where did the backfire come from (intake or exhaust?)

              i ride a 02 and years back had a similer problem. i cleaned the carb twice then took it to a pro had him clean it ran a little better then dumped the gas and put in fresh gas and problem went away

                  I assumed it had good gas in it. The post said the carb was cleaned. Never said it had new gas in it.

                      It could be that the enrichener circuit may be sticking or the float or float valve might be sticking. There have been weirder causes.

                        Snow, you should take the time to fill in your bike information in your profile. It will help us to know what mods you've done, the setup of your carb, etc.

                          Is it doing this with the enricher pulled out all the way?
                          If it doesn't fit force it....if it breaks it needed to be replaced anyway....

                            Pull the choke out all the way,start the bike, after about 15-20 seconds the bike will start to run rough. When it does push the choke in about 1/4 of the way until the bike smooths out. Ride with the choke out at that spot for a mile or 2 before pushing it in all the way. If that don't work you have an air leak on the carb/intake or a pc of junk still blocking the idle/pilot circuit somewhere .

                              Newer gas goes bad in like 6 months.

                                Look in the carb right after start and see if you are seeing fuel bubbling up from the bottom of the floor of the tunnel. You may have a stuck open or misaligned needle / float situation. You could have also created an air leek at the manifold whjile you were working on it

                                  Think I found the problem. The coaster inricher cover is cracked as well as the intake manifold

                                    The manifold has a rubber coating (i think for heat isolation.) It's not uncommon for the rubber coating to have cracks all over it, but it is not (Usually) an air leak. Air leaks are usually at the vacuum nipple (or attached vacuum lines) or the flanges at the cylinder heads.
