  • Rear Wheel alignment problem...help!

I have a 2000 Yamaha Road Star 1600. The bike is in great shape and I've only had it a couple months. The rear tire was thin and needed to be replaced. I removed the rear wheel (and backed up the adjustment nuts). The problem is I didnt accurately mark the existing axle location before I removed the wheel. I understand the factory marks arent necessarily trustworthy. Can someone give me a process to accurately locate the rear wheel axle? Thanks.

Thanks. I used the 3rd method. Worked fine!

Measure from the center of the axle to the center of the swing arm pivot bolt. Make left and right the same. I don’t have access to the swing arm bolt, so I use the string method. In the future, don’t loosen the adjuster bolts. You can remove and reinsert the axle without doing this.

Might drive others nuts, but the factory markings are not as bad as others make them out to be. I've never known any bike where those were actually bad or useless. That said, I use the factory markings on the swingarm, tighten 'till the belt tension is to factory spec with an actual tension gauge, then I 'fine tune' the alignment by working the adjusters 'til the belt will stay in the middle of the driven pulley, without working its way to one side of the pulley, or the other. Works just fine by me!

As QC suggested, the notch factory marks on the rear are possibly right on. Once you have measured using any other method, then note where those marks are. In the future you can use them with assurance. While they may be a little forward or rear at times, all you care about is that they are equal side to side.

I use the depth gauge feature of a dial caliper to ensure the same distance from the rear of the frame to the center of the rear axle nut. Haven't had any issues yet!

I just make sure the belt runs straight down the center of the rear pulley. Hasnt failed me.

Rodzim, this method (which was also on bikerron's link) is what I eventually used. Thumbs up! Thanks to you and bikerron.
