  • URGENT! Drive belt slipping?

Ok guys, same basket case bike back in my shop today. Clutch was slipping, installed brand new friction discs and the Barnett upgrade with heavy duty springs. Everything was done correctly and yes I soaked the plates in ATF for a few hours before installing.

Now I've got the belt tension right where it should be and in second gear when doing a hard pull it feels as if there is an oil slick on the road and it skips for a millisecond, but continues to pull. So far it only does it at high revs in second. Almost feels like when a regular chain bicycle skips a sprocket quickly.

I inspected the belt three times no damage, Teeth on the rear pulley are perfect. The only thing I can think of is that he had me install a Barons 31 tooth front pulley that was on his bike at some point and then swapped back to original and then he had me reinstall it again.

I know its not a fuel issue, got hat dialed in already.

So to review: not clutch, not fuel, not belt tension, not rear pulley, not clutch adjustment, and not tire out of alignment... so now I am stuck.... I keep going back to that front pulley, am I wrong in this thinking?

Would hate to remove his freedom pipes yet again and crack into that case just to find that it is in fine condition and its something else happening.

The reason this is so urgent is because he wants to leave on a four day road trip with his bike tomorrow morning, so I HAVE to get this straightened out, like right now.

I think you have no choice but to look at the front pully.

Sounds like the front pulley, the shaft or front pulley nut

Yup check the front pulley and check the splines on the shaft and pulley

feel up under and on the back side of the pulley cover you might find metal stuff.

At one time there were some aluminum front pulleys being sold that wore out pretty quick. Steel pulleys are the only way to go. Wouldn't hurt to check it.

Pulled the front pulley and sure as shit the tops of all of the cogs are worn flat, mix that with an original 2001 Yamaha drive belt and voila! The drive belt was skipping a single "tooth" under heavy load when doing hard pulls.

              Gave my buddy two options.

              1) replace the belt for $150-180 bucks and no guarantee I can get it in time.
              2) get the original 32-33 tooth pulley to me and loose the extra low end torque but be able to continue on his tri for 4th of July.

Waiting to hear back but I'll snap some pics of the pulley for all to see for future reference.

That sounds like one of the aluminum ones. I haven't heard of a steel one ever wearing out. I can't imagine what highway speeds would be like with a 31 tooth pulley. Also, if it's a 1700 a 33 tooth will cause the speedo to be dead accurate.

Crazy thing is, it is a steel pulley. Which leads me to think the belt may be worn or just really dirty, but how do you clean a belt?

I know this is older but does your year run a wet clutch? If so, you need to try this... I only used about 1/4 of the bottle and ALL my slip disappeared instantly , blew my friggin mind fellas...

Don't add any shit to oil... Use good proper synthetic oil for wet utch

Don't soak steels/disc's in ATF... Only in same oil you run

What brand discs/steels did you use?

What oil exactly do you run?

ATF is good to use for soaking the friction plates. It works great and won't hurt anything.

Kinda misses the mark for zinc content to be putting it in my bike.

I have been using 10700 in mine for 15 years. I knew nothing about Zinc content issues until recently.

replace it with another commander. letting a tire get to that condition is just neglectful. Google "tire wear bar" You wore the wear bar off a long time ago. Well before the threads/cords showed up.

And yes, that is a custom mounted Vietnam era ammo can that my best friends father brought back, and when I came up with the idea for an ammo can saddle bag, he loved it so much he gave it to me... it was worn and faded so I had to paint it, and I welded the handle up into place to stop the rattle, then mounted it and ran some led light inside, and some sheet insulation across the bottom so the exhaust doesnt melt all my shite, and it came out pretty decent...

xx there are some RS gurus on this site. you would do well to heed advice , rather than offer it most of the time. these guys been doing RS's for 2 decades.............. they offer invaluable words of wisdom, some of these guys are diesel and airplane mechanics, and they live and breathe ROADIES.......WELCOME

If you have 31t front pulley on a 1600 your supposed to get a different size belt as well... If you OEM belt and 31T pulley it could lead to problems
