  • 1700 Rocker Arm Removal - Who's done it?

I have the 1600 service manual but the 1700 design is different and I'm wondering how difficult is. Is it straight forward or are there any gotchas to be aware of?

The only thing I know of, is the push rod lengths. I beleave it has 1 push rod that is shorter then the other 3, and must be installed back into the same place as it came out of.
The 1600 push rods are all the same lengths. The 1600 has a rocker ratio of 1.9 to 1, and the 1700 has a 1.4 to 1 ratio. Yes, the cams are way different.

I'm just looking to inspect my rocker arm shafts, so won't be removing any pushrods. I've been getting an abnormal intermittent knocking that's load dependent and it's getting worse over time. I'm wondering if it might be similar to the Harley rocker knock that's caused by the shafts wearing and slipping. It doesn't harm performance but it's as annoying as hell.

Bleed the lifters by rotating the engine over until the rocker is at full lift on either exhaust or intake and let it sit for about 20 minutes. After the wait, rotate engine over until the other rocker goes to full lift and wait another 20 minutes.
When checking the sync of the rocker to valves, make sure the cylinder you are checking is on the compression stroke. That will insure your cams are at the "no lift" part of the lopes, both exhaust and intake.
With the lifters bled down, it makes it easy to move the rockers because your working against just the lifter springs.
Inspect the rocker arm side play and shaft. You can even remove the rocker shafts to inspect with the lifters bled down.

Side note: You could remove the rocker arm and shaft, but remember that the push rod will be out of the rocker pocket, making the push rod just sitting in the lifter pocket by gravity alone. You should just inspect one set at a time.
Hope I didn't confuse what you are wanting to do.

I did that today acrually, i was getting a weird knock at low revs under load. When i took the valve covers off i checked the valve clearance thinking that was the issue (all good there). I was gonna put it all back together when i noticed one of the rocker shafts was about 1/16 of an inch further out than the rest. I push on it and i could move it easlly. Im not talking about the rocker itself but the tube that goes inside of it. The tube has a slot for the front bolt to pass through, i guess my bolt is wore a bit because it was tight but the tube still had play.
i put a different bolt in and it got tight as it should.
there is still a little valve train noise but the rod knock like sound is gone

One of my rocker shafts was like that also on my 1700 FI. Ot was tight so I left it alone. Why would that contribute to noise?

I guess they move side to side when the engine is under load, why i have no idea because its only at low rpms. If you move them side to side by hand you will hear the same noise

Fortunately new shafts are only $25 a piece:
