    2006. Will not start without a little throttle help. I've had this bike 7 years and this just started. In the past, all it needed was pull choke,tap starter,15-20 seconds later, hit the highway. Now the choke does not seem to do anything. It will start if you turn the throttle while cranking.. And while riding, It will die at every stoplight if you don't constantly give it fuel. Pull in the clutch and don't give it some gas, yep dies just like you turned the key off. it started after I put music on it and cleaned the air filter.

    Has it been sitting all winter without fuel stabilizer in the fuel? If so, there is likely ethanol gunk in the system. Put a half of bottle of Seafoam in a full tank of regular fuel and ride it like you stole it.

      It is my daily ride. I'm lucky to live in the south. We get to ride all year through.

    Sounds like a clogged pilot jet to me.


    Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

      Spraying carb cleaner in the Pilot air feed, turning the PMS screw out 3 to 5 turns, then use high pressure air to blow out the Pilot air feed, will usually clean out the Pilot system if that's where the problem lies.
      Don't forget to screw the PMS screw back to where is was.

        Maybe you put the wrong kind of music on it. Try some soft classical, or maybe Zem Phere and his magic flute. Hard rock may make it worse.

            hi Ricky, i have exactly the same issue with my xv1700 carb. In Addition i´ve checked the sparkplugs and they are black coated. This could cause due to two major reasons to work on it. An issue in the ignition line or in the fuel line. Black coated sparkplugs (carbonized not oil) mean that the ignition in the combustion chamber is maybe too cold. This is the case if the mixture is too rich (fuellineissue) or the sparkplugs dont ignite correctly (ignitionissue). The way i´am going to solve the issue is more the one step.
            1. i check the carburetor by just open the floatchamber and check an clean the needlevalve. in addition I check the whole line from the fuelvalve via fuelfilter, fuelpump second fuelfilter(internal), If this is done, an issue in the fuelline can be excluded because there is not really more where the issue could come from.
            2. If the issue still exist after the fuellinecheck I will change the rectifier/regulator of the generator. Because if the regulator is demaged this can cause weak ignitionsparks because the power that the coils need for a proper ignition is not feeded by the generator then.
            If this will not solve the issue either there must be a problem with the ignitorunit itself. I will not hope so because this is a very rare issue with Yamaha.
            I let you know what the issue was once I´ve solved it.
