  • Noises while riding.

I just took my bike out of storage, and I found that there was a large fluid leak beneath the bike once I removed it from it's storage locker. The oil level looked fine, and the bike starts, and idles well. But when I started riding I hear a thumping noise, and an occasional grinding noise. The thumping noise frequency is consistent. The grinding was occasional. I am pretty new to bikes so sorry if this is a very vague descriptor. The sound seemed like it was originating from the chain area more towards the front wheel. Any recommendations would be appreciated, and any pointers on doing some of the recommended checks will also help. Thanks

Smell the oil to find out if it is gear oil or motor oil first. More than likely your chain in the transfer case.

I would also check the front drive belt pulley. They have been known to come loose. It's easy to check, just remove the wagon wheel cover on the left side below the seat. No gasket to replace either.

Both ideas are spot on. You'd have known if that was gas, as the smell would have given it away immediately. You'll know if it is gear oil, as it has it's own pungent scent when under your nose. Engine oil has little scent, and it's not strong or unpleasant. Thumping and grinding... well, that would sound to me like the transfer case chain, but the oil smell would help to confirm that diagnosis pretty quickly.

The front belt drive pulley is far more common among our R*s, and is easy to check... just a handful of bolts to remove the cover on the left side.

You've got to start where roadie and TX suggested... I think they're right on the money!

The front pulley being loose could explain both the oil leak and thumping noise. I would check the pulley and tighten if loose and use locktight on the nut then make sure that the tbs are bent over in a couple spots.

If it's loose enough to have caused a leak, more than likely the shaft is damaged too.

All these tasks are easier with a manual.

Is the grinding only while you are moving? Could be your front brake. Sometimes the disc gets a little cruddy when sitting over the winter.

so what I understand so far, is either the bolt for the drive belt is loose and needs to be tightened, or I need to top up the crank case oil? or is it more likely I would need to replace or make adjustments to the chain? I will be attempting all these fixes tomorrow morning, so just trying to plan ahead and make sure I have all the right tools and fluids.

Like Roadiemort said, you should get a manual. It would really help you along. No adjustments to the chain. Drive pulley nut needs torqued to 61 foot lbs.

No way to know to top up the crankcase oil... can't get an honest reading of that level in any case. Since it's the beginning of riding season, it's always best to start that on fresh oil... change the engine oil... BUT, only according to proper procedure. You'll be real glad you learned how that's to be done correctly! And, regardless of any other source, Yamaha or otherwise... 4 qts for the engine/trans only, and only 2 at a time at that... after you've drained from 2 drain plugs. DO get the manual. It's free!!! And, for the love of God, don't use any auto oil! Bike specific oil only, if you love your baby!

where can I get the manual for free? I was only able to find it for sale online. although I have been using the next model iteration of the same bike manual, and youtube videos to help me understand what I'm actually doing.

Someone here knows the answer to that... I had bought one on a CD years ago. But, the free online version's been posted many times... but, maybe not since we went to the new website here. Somebody know or got that link for BC?

The bolt being talked about is the bolt holding the front drive belt pulley. There is "NO" chain at all to adjust on the bike. Also as said there is no accurate way to "top up the oil" being the beginning of the riding season just change the oil and only use 4 qts when changing it using the oil change procedure in the book or tech section of this forum.

I'm in the pricesp of draining and refilling the gear box oil, and I noticed this. It looks like there is a valve or hose connector without a hose on it. If this supposed to be like that?

I think that is the carb vent, some put a hose on it to go to the ground.

Ok, so I popped open the cover and discovered these guide rollers worn to shit, and it looks like there is a big gash in the drive belt. That must have been chopping at the rollers, hence the grinding noise.

Oh man, lucky that didn't break on you. Time to change the belt. Depending on how solidly your swing arm axle is in place, it shouldn't be TOO hard.

I'm guessing this most likely means I need a new drive belt. What would have caused this to happen?

Your belt must be tracking off to one side.

                    • #18
The belt still had a bolt lodged in it. So I took out the bolt, and the belt has a hole in it now. Thanks for the help guys, I at least know why the noise was happening and how to fix it.

Inspect the pulleys very closely. That bolt could have left some nasty marks and will tear up a new belt.
