  • New knocking sound

Went for a ride yesterday for about an hour and everything went well. Motor sounded great, it road and preformed great, a wonderful day.
I pulled up to the shop and turned it off to open the door. When I pushed it in the shop it made a loud knocking sound about 2 or 3 times for every 1 time the rear wheel went around.
I just pushed it around again today and the knocking is now a very light tap sound.
    What could this be?

Post a video of it running, can't really guess without hearing it ourselves.

Can't hear it when it's running. Only when pushing it when it's off.

Think it's motor or maybe drive line noise?

I though maybe drive line also.

If the noise is while you were pushing it and it wasn't running, I'd pull off the side cover and check your pulley nut to make sure it's still tight. They work loose and can create some sounds like that.

      That's what I was thinking.

some of the 1600's had issues with the rear wheel bearing spinning in the housing. Haven't heard of anyone in a long time but if it is coming from the rear wheel area that is where I would look.

Finally got around to checking the front pully and everything seems ok. Pushed bike around with engine off and not hearing the knocking anymore. Started it up and let the engine get hot, shut it off and pushed it atound again and still no knocking. I'm still a little perplexed.
Do you think it's ok to ride?

While you guys are talking noises, my 2009 Road star is making a new noise this spring. As best I can describe the it, its a chirping noise. First ride this season, After about 25 miles, slowing down for a light I heard this noise for the first time. Pulled off and other than to say it sounds up high near the front cylinder. Leave it off for ten mins and restart, no noise. The hotter it is outside the nosier it gets{and it gets loud}. My hearing is not as good as it once was and I would like to know if if you guys could point me in the right direction. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks Bigjohn21

A chirping sound is typically a drive belt that is not adjusted properly.

I think this chirping noise is more engine related because once it starts i can park the bike and do my best to locate the noise with no luck so far. Seams to be temperature related. The hotter it is outside the nosier it is. The frequency goes up with engine rpm up until 2000rpm when the engine noise covers it up. I am needing to figure this out soon due to a trip to the tail of the dragon in a week and a half.

    Thanks guys

Does you bike still have the AIS system on it? It's the unit above the starter in front and will attach to chrome pipes roughly 1/2" thick that bolt to the front of the heads. I too have heard that chirp and wondered if it was normal with the AIS in tact. I've since removed the AIS and don't recall if I've ever heard it again.

Read your post. First didn't know what a AIS was, looked it up and it made perfect sense. Chirping sound i.e. air system. Went to YouTube university to see how to deal with it. Took it off cleaned with throttle body cleaner. There was a solenoid controlled valve that was spring loaded open that wasn't completely opening. Put it all back together and took it for a ride. No chirping!!! Brad_G thank you so much. I am going to the Great Smokey Mountains the week of 6/3/23 and the thought of leaving the Road Star at home wasn't a good feeling. If any of you guys are going to be in the area, give me holler and we can tame the dragon together.

        Thanks again

Glad to hear that it appears to be solved. It was just a hunch I had. I never bothered to look into it. Since I put different exhaust on my bike I went ahead and removed the AIS system. I think it cleans up the appearance of the engine removing the extra items. Enjoy your time in the Smokey Mountains. I'd love to get down there sometime on the bike.
