  • Ok guys need help my old 75 year old brains not work well anymore.

The starter will not turn the engine over we pulled the starter off another engine and that one will not work turn it over.
took 1 spark plug from each cyl and still no good. How many safety’s are on the bike 06 1700 . What am I missing.
Thanks for any help. It’s hell getting old.

neutral safety switch, kickstand switch. I'm assuming you'd grounded a plug to something metal to see that you were getting spark? Do you have fuel going to it?

Is the battery good? If so check for voltage at the starter while pushing the start button. if no voltage start checking voltage at start relay, both sides while pushing the start button and report back. also let us know if the start relay is clicking when the button is pushed. My guess is that it isn't. you also have a main fuse. If you don't have gauge sweep when turning on the key check the fuse.

The better battery is super good I even took a draw test is a brand new battery it’s not a battery problem and when I turn the key I can hear is there a starter solenoid clicking the starter is good it just won’t turn the engine over something has got that engine locked up we pulled two spark plugs from each cylinder and it still won’t turn over but I can’t think of what would keep that engine locked up . oh and we put two different good starters on it and it will not turn that engine over like a piston welding shutter.

does it have oil in it? What happens to the battery voltage when you try to turn it over? Need to check at the battery with a volt meter while trying to crank it over. Also did you check for voltage right at the starter while pushing start button?. If all that is good then time to turn it over with a socket and big bar. There should be someplace on 1 side or the other of the crankshaft under a cover to manually turn it over.

Is this a new to you bike? if so have you ever heard it run?

The motor is seized or locked somehow. Will the back wheel turn in gear?

Is this the bike you just acquired?

If you can roll the bike when in neutral, I would think that maybe the engine is seized. Have you tried pushing it real fast in neutral with a couple guys and then slamming it into second gear?

A little confused here…. The starter doesnt turn the motor over as per initial post… starter relay is clicking as per follow up post… he never mentioned that the starter engaged the motor and the motor doesnt turn over and yet we jumped right to a siezed motor…
OP…. Does the starter engage the motor and not turn anymore?… (as in pointing at a siezed motor)…
or does the starter act dead when you hear the starter solenoid click?

our starters are always engaged. Not like a car starter that kicks out to engage a flywheel/ring gear

Well trying to keep descriptions simple just gets your shit riled up doesn’t it davej… i was just trying to establish if the starter actually activated …. Of course you seem to like picking shit apart…
It would appear by this thread that you had further information by talking on the phone to the OP… that little tidbit of information could have saved a bit of confusion on everybodies replies…
But you keep being you ….

Take the starter that is not on the bike and put the starter cable on it without installing it on the bike. It will need grounded to the motor and try the starter button to see if starter motor runs. If you have a jack raise the bike, take the front pulley cover off and turn the large pulley nut with the bike in 2nd gear. Should be able to turn motor with breaker bar.

I talked to him on the phone and he did all the correct testing including testing starter off the bike and tried a different known good starter on the bike. good voltage all the way to the starter. When he met the previous owner the PO was gonna purchase a engine he had for sale. the previous owner decided to sell the bike instead of swapping an engine. So he purchased this bike knowing he already had a good engine in the event that the original engine on the bike was bad.

the starter gear is in constant mesh with the engine on a 1 way clutch. It doesn't kick out to engage the engine. with this type of starting system and a good starter, Sparkplugs removed there is nothing much left to keep the engine from turning over.. Removing the plugs eliminates the possibility of hydro lock. Oh it also had brand new oil in it. My guess is the PO run it with no oil in it and filled it up after it stopped turning..

1200 seemedime a deal....but with a dead motor it's not such a good deal...sucks...but since he has a motor to swap not terrible...as long as bike is in good shape cosmetically

How the hell do people break a Road Star Motor? Things are tanks....

Was that the bike on CL that we were speculating might be a scam?
