  • Bike won't move in gear

Reposting here in correct forum. Admin please delete my post in the classified section.

I need some help from the experts.

My 02 broke down on me a few days ago. I was riding and all of a sudden I lost power to the rear wheel. My first thought was clutch related because I had been doing slow speed friction zone cone course riding when it happened. I had already been having slippage at high RPM's if I cranked the throttle to pass someone and had planned on doing the Barnett conversion. I checked my pulley nut and it is tight, but I do need to get it off and check the splines

In gear while on the ground, I give it throttle and nothing happens. On a jack, the rear wheel spins slowly in gear but doesn't respond to any throttle.

I've gotten some answers from Lug nut and Brianmac on the original post (which I put in the wrong location) as well as some advice in the FB group. I just wanted to get any and all advice or suggestions to go through when I have time to start taking it apart and trying to identify and hopefully fix the issue.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!

i would not worry about where u post it here, we usually just look at "latest posts" which covers all categories.

Ok thanks. On my phone it doesn't show on latest posts when it's in classifieds

This is a pretty vague description for diagnosis…
    1. Is it making and noise when you engage the clutch while on the ground ?
    2. Does the motor appear to show some symptoms of a load when you engage the clutch?
    3. since you accessed the engine pully to check for fastening torque… did you try to put it gear, engage the clutch.. and observe anything..?
    4. Did the problem appear suddenly while riding or was it a gradual loss of response…?

Unless you provide further information/observations to assist in the diagnostic procedure… it would be a shot in the dark to proceed…

obvious issues to check are the pulley splines on the engine belt pully and a simple clutch test of:
Shut off motor… engage first gear and release clutch… push/pull bike while in gear and figure out if bike moves… obviously listening/observing/feeling what is happening while you perform this clutch test will point the user in the proper direction direction for further test/diagnostics…

It happened while riding as I stated. I was doing a circle and it lost power to the rear wheel as if I squeezed the clutch in and the bike dropped because I was in a lean. When I do slow speed practicing or even stop and go riding, my clutch gets hot and then gets soft making it difficult to get back into neutral. When that happens in the parking lot, a quick spin out of the friction zone cools it enough for the clutch to cool off and stiffen up again. That didn't happen this time as I was still in the middle of the exercise. After I let it sit for a few minutes, I went to start it again. It started fine and felt like it shifted into 1st fine, but it didn't move when I gave it throttle.

Once home, I checked the pulley nut which hadn't backed off. I still have to remove it and look at the splines per Brian's recommendation. I jacked it up and noticed that in first gear, the wheel spins on it's own but won't spin faster when I give it any throttle. Hence why it won't move when it's on the ground and I'm trying to ride it. Hopefully that description is better for you. If all you can give is a shot in the dark, that works too.

From what I understand about what your clutch was doing before hand, I would go right to the clutch and repair the damage. I'm fairly certain your oil will be contaminated and should be flushed out.

WHAT state are u in, a RS clutch shouldnt over heat this time of year in most of the US . especailly if air is flowing over the engine. take a closer look at your airflow over motor, choice of engine oil, and make sure your are not running too lean due to not matching jetting to exhaust/air cleaner, or dirty jets.

Yup ..i'm betting burnt to shit particle laced oil....and friction discs that are not only worn excessively but possibly actually broke in pieces. Also the steels are probably glazed REAL good and show heat-discolorstion and maybe even warpage.

Be sure to pull the wire and the friction disc, steel, and cup/retainer that is behind the wire. Gonna need to replace everything

Thanks fellas. I'll check those splines but go to the clutch and see what I find. I'll report back. Thanks

I watched the video that you made on the pulley, nut, and shaft.
I'd have to say that there isn't anything wrong with your pulley.
Go to your clutch, that's where your problem is.

My bet is toasted clutch as well…

quick check on the pully splines… remove cover.. start engine… put in first… engage clutch… if the shaft/nut is turning and the gear is not… stripped splines… removing the gear is not required to check this ‘down and dirty ‘ method

I did that already and everything turns. I just can't post the video here

As long as you've got the cover off the front pulley, it would be a good time to put a paint mark across the pulley nut and the shaft. It makes a quick and easy visual check to see if the nut ever moves.

This is a screenshot from a video I took which I posted to the Facebook group for those on there. In first, the pulley turns along with everything else but does not speed up when throttle is applied

That video test would be better if the wheel was on the ground… a bit of drag on the engine pully would allow the shaft/nut to rotate if splines were stripped. At best… the test as presented would be a little inconclusive on the condition of pully/spline slippage…
the gunning of the motor did seem to bump tire speed up slightly without any detectable pully slippage…. So it does lead to a conclusion of clutch issue based on your prior description of events leading up to failure…

the pulley is a 15 min check, should be done annually anyway, might as well as cover all ur bases
