I think your problem is a bad clutch cable your pulley nut does not look like at stake fully so probably loose and you still don't know if the recall has been done. You're spending way too much time and effort on this old metric bike. If I were you I would sell it push it off a bridge or whatever and start with a different bike. We love Road Stars on this page but we've had good luck with them if the kind of luck you've had I would not get another one either. Highly recommend you look at Hondas or Kawasaki or Suzuki.
    funny

Road Star one of many, I put 30,000 on it and broke it without trying

Will try to post video with bike off ground in gear jumping arround

Dosent take half a brain to see problem is not good

sound is deep in transmission, grabbing and grinding

new bearing in clutch cover moved shaft back but still too much free play, shaft is not held in place

So i was just wondering …..

how long before this troll shows up again with a different username spouting off the BS he has becomes so adept with??

i believe this is about the fourth or fifth time…. Some personalities that come to mind…
the canadian #1…. Same general holier than thou mechanic with the bad carb
the canadian #2… slightly toned down version with the spark issue
the northeaster…. Trying to make a ducati out of a vtwin

there are several others that come to mind but these three come to mind as the most similar narcisstic attitudes….. kind of hard to hide that particular personality trait…

i tried to look back on my posts and identify the different usernames that i associate with this bored, pathetic, loser…. But alas… i must be doing it wrong since my history of posts do not seem to include these particular replies…

To my fellow valid clinic gurus…. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experiences with us… your assistance has been most invalueable to the majority of clinic members who wish to turn wrenches on our roadstars….

                you guys ROCK…!!!!
Will go back under my rock and think about my next name

                thinking Bam! Bam!

Putting car tire on 1600 Road Star your rolling the dice and may crap out

my motorcycle may or may not have needed washer and retaining clips from recall, no punch mark above vin #

Under 1,000 miles and transmission shaft holding clutch basket started moving

Car tire and extra stress from added traction ate Barnett's clutch bearing and grinding noise came out at same time, shaft moving

Replaced clutch cover bearing and have new friction disks in, have full clutch , new cable and spring every thing working as it should

Noise and jump still there, grinding and noise not as bad but still there, transmission shaft holding clutch basket is moving

This kinda maked me think about bike building show and ego, know it alls that picked up a CB750-4 think Santee hard tail chopper with fork lift and slammed it on ground, beat with hammer

Then started building custom bikes that rode so ruff they could only put 12 to 15 psi in tires and rear view vibrators had no view

had to be HULK size to hold handle bars wile ridind and arms looked real out of shape with all of the mass viberatingggg

and talk show host that purchased one asking why all power went through back tail light? If tail light out bike no run

Me change name will be BAM! BAM!

Not even trying to RUB on all of the THIN skin

Played with new toy that breaks easy, there was no information or GobblyGookee I could find and kinda glad bike didn't slam me to the ground wile on interstate

Kawasaki and Goldwing better made for car tire

Will put 1600 on mothballs and play with when have time to fix with more CC and stronger stuff in transmission, may come back with NOS if can find forged kit

Seems one or two know a little about laughing gas or just blowing hot air

                    BAM! BAM!

Everything you stated above is your opinion and not factual. There are many of us that have used car tires and Barnett clutch spring conversions with absolutely zero problems whatsoever. You're jumping to conclusions that are not based in reality or logic. Best thing you can do is leave Yamahas alone and go back to the Goldwing.

Worst thing in my book and yes my opinion

Anyone ready to sell off any motorcycle with a known problem

A special place made just for that kind
Pushing off a clift or into the ocean , pond , river or lake could kill a tree or a fish not so friendly

I may hang from tree and use for target practice or mount engine on paddle boat just to have a safe way to use noise maker parts

Had I found any information at all about this motorcycle regarding stuff I could have saved time and effort

Heard all about Harley Davidson trying to sue over sound, that was funny

Talked to more than one that had only good to say but these people washed and waxed more than they rode, bet their bikes never topped 10,000 miles but went through ten gallons of wax and saw dealer service every year for battery charge or change

15% ethanol blend will make many look for a different bike , No doubt about carb problems with stock set up

bet Vespa has better carb set up, more reliable and able to get more miles with less maintenance

kinda why I'm thinking "NOS" just for backup

                    The truth is FUN

                    BAM! BAM!

My bet is he doesnt even have a bike… he has way too much time on his hands and he is trying way too hard to push his opinion as fact to anyone that is willing to listen long enough to humor himself…

pretty much the textbook definition of a narcistic personality disorder…. It took him several days to reply to the last series of posts on this thread… maybe he is off his meds again and the caretaker is having a difficult time stabilizing his mood swings…

either way… his entertainment value has dwindled considerably with the constant negativity toward our beloved bikes… tis a pity the moderators do not disable his access to this clinic for brazen abuse of the principles of decency…

or he is just plain NUTS….!!!!

I read the entire post and agree with your assessment entirely. He’s not looking for help or assistance, in my opinion after reading his post, he’s trying to impress with his comments. He still hasn’t convinced me that he’s smart enough to figure it out. He can’t even fix his WiFi connection…WTH. Too much time and not accomplishing a thing. I do think the members should stay away from personal comments although probably everybody will agree with your statements. Bam Bam feeds off of these replies but if you notice he does not take the advice of experienced Road Star mechanics. Why is he working so hard to try to convince us on the forum that his Gold Wing is a better bike rather than try to actually fix the problem? There’s your answer! He’s a Bot! Or a Honda salesman but definitely not willing to actually fix his issue. Frankly Bam Bam, I’m not impressed. I agree with the long time members, move on if you don’t want to actually listen instead of persisting with impressing. I’ve only been a member for under a half year, didn’t like some of the comments and made the mistake of calling one member out. Man that was a mistake for sure. I felt like I was the suspect not the victim after the members that knew this guy for a long time had let me have it. My point, refrain from personal character opinions. Ignore him. He’s got a right to eat your words and digest them then shit them right back at you if that’s what you want. In my opinion most members are knowledgeable and I have great respect for a few of them because of the way they carry themselves and you are on the top of the list. I’ve read a lot of your post and never seen you as frustrated as you were with Bam Bam. You were right but unfortunately this guy knows how to push buttons and it gave him personal gratification. That was his only goal… to agonize, not to fix his bike. As one member said…this is a Road Star mechanical clinic! Don’t make it a psychological clinic. 10-4? Thanks for all that you do for the forum Tcontrol.

So, here is my take on the original poster.
                          Ignorance is bliss!
You buy a 20 year old motorcycle, that may have changed ownership several times, and those owners may have done some work on it.

Now, whether you have a good internet connection or not, all you had to do is Google the year, make and model of that motorcycle and gotten tons of information about it. And I am sure from that search, this site would have been included.
Once you bought the bike, you could have googled the Vin number. Googling the Vin number would have given you NHTSA recalls, and you can search any vehicle and get info about it.

Then you join one of the Best sites around.
Then you Bitch and Complain about your bike. Rather than listen to what everyone is telling you.

Having bigger tires, much less a car tire, will not cause a transmission failure. Having your drive belt too tight, will cause bearing failure. Grinding the gears, will cause a failure.

Everything you originally described, indicated some type of a clutch failure.
Will the clutch slip on these bikes,YES! This is a known issue with the stock clutch, caused by a weak spring.
Remember this, Springs will and do wear out!
These motors produce a lot of torque, and at high speeds/gears the motor is trying to turn larger gears. And if the clutch spring is weak, well guess what? It will slip!
Slippage means to stop and investigate as to why is it slipping!
                          So, the clutch seems "mushy"
Stop and investigate, check the obvious first!
If you hear grinding noises, STOP riding it.

I am sure that, you more than likely did not know that the bike had a Barnett pressure plate, but if you had done any research on this site, you would have come across threads about Barnett bearing failures.
If you continue to ride on any other the above mentioned items, then ignorance is bliss!

Another thing, did you at least attempt to do the simplest of maintenance?
You should have at least changed the oil and filter. So simple and easy to do. And it could have saved you $$$.
Had you done your due diligence, you would have researched what type of oil is needed for these motors.
Regular car oil will not work in these engines.
These engines require oil for "WET" clutches and high zinc for the valve train.
Also, this site will give you tips on how to change the oil.

Again, if you continued to ignore any of the above mentioned items, this will cause premature failure, due to your IGNORANCE!

I’m 6 months late on this post but catching up and learning mechanical troubleshooting and repairs. Im only a 6 month old new member but now loyal to this forum. I’m curious what stopped this guy from further posts? Was it the last post by SbTx-? Did his WiFi stop working? My opinion, if he would concentrate on fixing his WiFi more than persisting on trying to impress long time experienced Road Star mechanics, then he might be able to actually research as SbTx_Rider stated! Allow me to add an additional opinion, when trying to help a guest or new member, keep in mind that this person may not have the mechanical aptitude or experience that some do on this forum. Making comments to make a person feel stupid or ignorant does not help matters. If that is your intention then you are no different than Bam Bam! Stay focused on the issue question and help that person out if he is willing to take your advise. If he is not willing then move on, he’ll get the point I’m sure. Thank you to all the mechanics that are sincere about helping out. Remember, this is not a social media platform like FB or TWit. Have a good year. Ding forget to vote in November 2022.
