  • 2000 Yamaha Road Star Engine Oil Leak

Take deep close at the picture, my 2000 Yamaha Road Star is leaking oil. Am hoping there's no cracks on the bottom base as you can see that's it oil wet, but the main leakage is around the bolt. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you for your honest answers

Oil drain plug. The crushed washer needs to be replace and torque to spec. You can reuse them but I don’t. Cheap insurance is to replace it and be done with it.

The original silver crush washers are more than likely still on the drain plugs BUT they have been reused and never replaced and finally are so thin they don't seal against metal surface. Have to dig them off bolt with a sharp edge of a thin knife to remove. Order a pack or 14mm copper crush washers and replace both each oil change

Leaking from same spot...the drain plug? Clean both drain bolt areas real good with paper towel and brake clean. Did you tighten enough (manual has torque value..don't over tighten and crack housing!).

Did you notice it leaking before changing oil.

Pic of crush washer you used ?

I have found that the only washers that seal are the OEM ones which are a thin hollow metal, likely aluminum. I have tried steel automotive washers that look the same but they don't seal. The rubber ones you get at the auto store definitely don't work. Your washers should be hollow and crush slightly as you tighten them down. Don't get them confused with the brass or aluminum type washers that are used on brake lines.

I've used the copper crush washers on probably 20 bikes (but 20 pack or 50pack at a time in Amazon cheap) and they always work well. Not worth reusing for about 3 cents each just get new ones.

One thing is to make sure you have removed the original one that may be smahed up real thing...use a thin blade pocket knife to get it off the bolt...if you don't look close it may appear there isn't one....

If you double up a good copper washer and an old mashed aluminum one that MIGHT leak

I have found these seals to work really well.
Dowty seal bonded washer. M14. Pack of 8. Water, Oil,Fuel Resistant Top Quality. You can use 9/16" ones as well.

This is what I used. I was going to put on the aluminum crush washers but thought maybe the rubber washer would seal better.

I used something similar on the oil tank plug but not on the engine plug. The OE ones actually "crush" as you tighten them where this style doesn't.

Previously it had the OEM crush washer and it was still leaking from the engine plug.

Hopefully the bolt wasn't overtightened and damaged/cracked anything...which would be pretty unusual

Rare but it does happen. Darrel Edway (RIP) broke a chunk off his 04's case removing the oil drain plug.
