  • It all started with a rusty tank

    I need help guys! This may be a long post but you have to know the back story.
    I've owned two V-Stars in the past and loved them both so when I came across this Road Star, it's a 2008 xv 1700 a fuel injected, with only 460 miles I had to have it. It was garage kept but wasn't properly stored and had rust in the tank with several pen holes. I cleaned and lined the tank repaired the pen holes and road it the 50 miles home. It ran like a champ! There's 1600 miles on it now a new aftermarket fuel pump and I've cleaned the injectors twice and added an online fuel filter. It ran better than it has since I've owned it last night but when I got on today headed to East Texas to see the grandkids it made it 20 miles and started acting like the injectors were clogging again so I pulled over and began the process of removing the injectors again. All went well but when I got it back together and turned the key it throws error code 1 which is the ECU no signal code. I searched for loose plugs, wires, grounds anything that would cause this and nothing. Bike won't run!!!! Now I'm twenty miles from home stuck in a motel for the night. Any help with this would be a blessing. Thanks guys

    I've never heard of this in the 10 years or so I've been on this forum. I also have a 2008. I'm only guessing but wonder if some of the tank lining flaked off, you're non OEM fuel pump took a dump, your inline filter is not allowing adequate pressure to the injectors or the tank vent nipple is clogged with rust or tank lining. Will it run when you remove the gas cap?

      Thank you for responding. Not sure about the gas cap but like I was saying after I put the new fuel pump and cleaned injectors it ran like a champ. It was after I got it back together that the error 1 code came up

          I'll let you know about the gas cap but what about the error 1 code
          that scares me, sounds like money and I can't afford it. I really need a new tank and injectors but that still doesn't answer the code

            If you want to continue to have problems and work on bike get frustrated and not ride then keep the rusted repaired tank and aftermarket fuel pump and spend 100 hours messing with it.

            OR

            Find a nice used non rusty tank and OEM fuel pump and be done with it. If the issue is sealant/coating junk from tank liner clogging pump/injectors then your never going to fix it properly without replacing

            Life is too short to chase gremlins and not ride.....

              Yes sir got you on that the issue has been funds and doing what I can to stay on the road not just for pleasure but to keep food on the table. As soon as I can I will have a new tank but until then can you help me figure out this error code 1 and why there's no ECU signal, please

                If you used liquid to line the tank, I suspect you plugged up the tank breather tube on the front lower right of the tank. May not be your only problem, but possibly one of them. Many aftermarket parts are crap. Like Lugnut said, OEM pump would be the best.

                  Even if youbget bike running good again...you have tank liner that may flake off later...plug injectors/pump....just hate to see you have continual issues and get stranded ruin a trip...have AT LEAST a $100 tow bill...etc.

                  Now...if its just an electrical problem then that would be an easier solution. But from what you described happening and being basically brand new with rusty now lined tank and aftermarket pump....I suspect its due to pump/injector being clogged and that is what is throwing a code.

                    Here is a copy past from service manual on Er-1.

                    Fault code No. Item Symptom Able / un- able to start Able / un- able to drive
                    Er-1 ECU internal malfunc- tion
                    (output signal error)
                    No signals are received from the ECU. Unable Unable
                    Did you remove any wires when working on the tank and injectors? Do the needles sweep when turning on the key? Seems most likely that you have a connector not making good connection.
