  • loss of power on highway

Hello everyone, I’m new here. I’ve been searching through the forums for about 2 weeks to figure out my issue and haven’t found the definitive cause. The bike has 62k on the odometer and I bought it with that much.

I have a 2004 road star that has an issue where once in a while it feels like it’s missing on one cylinder and then picks it back up. At highway speeds it happens as well. but it doesn’t do it right away I have to be on the freeway for about 20 minutes before it happens. It happens with a full tank as well.

    things I’ve tried:
    seafoam through the tank
    adjusted idle back to 900rpm
Checked plugs (they all look great)
    cleaned and inspected the intake.
    checked for vacuum leaks

something I will be doing will be replacing the fuel filter. It doesn’t look great on the input side.

I defer to you all to try and see if there is something I’m missing.

thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like you may be on the right track. eliminate all the easy inexpensive things first. Changing the fuel filter will never hurt anything and it is a cheap thing to do, they often get overlooked during a yearly service.. Also start the bike in a dark area at night and look up under the tank at the coils to see if you have a bunch of sparks coming from the coils. Also look to see if your throttle cables have also rubbed against the coil and shorting the coil out. It could also be a coil breaking down when it gets hot, That could explain why it takes a few minutes of running before it happens.

Next to check would be coils/coil connections and as Dave said see if there is rubbing against throttle cables. Check battery connections for tightness of connections. Maybe jets in carb have some blockage (but probably wouldn't give the issue your describing. Also check the coils (multi meter and manual) for correct output (or just throw two good used coils on... Maybe can find them cheap)...

from Solon, IA. Good luck in your quest to get things straightened out. Not much to add as davej and Lug Nut gave some sound starting points. If it takes a while to develop and with heat I'm leaning toward a coil myself. But the fuel filters are cheap and it's a good maintenance item to do anyway. So I'd start there.

Thanks for the help, I took the carb apart and cleaned it and put it all back and it’s running better now. Replaced the fuel filter and that also increased the flow of fuel. The petcock seems to be leaking a small amount so I may get that but overall I’m not certain what else might need work. One of the air jets is stuck in its place and looks to have been stripped out. (It’s on top and leads into the diaphragm) I couldn’t get it out.

she’s running at about 25mpg @80mph with solo rider. so I guess that’s my next item to track down. Why is the fuel economy so much lower than what I’d expect. (Was hoping for 30 at least at 80mph)

I got this well loved bike for a decently low price for the features so I don’t mind putting elbow grease to getting her where I want her, so again thanks for the help and to let me know I might be on the right track.

At 80 mph, your fuel mileage will drop quite a bit. You might want to consider a pulley change to lower the RPMs.

Thanks duke. I’ll take a look around for that information and see if it’s something I might be able to do. Never even considered that.

Do you know what speed the best mpg is? I’m assuming around 60mph.

I found, with a proper tuned carb, that around 65 to 70 gave me the best fuel mileage when cruising. I was getting 50+ mpg, but if I get on it, it would drop quickly.
I'm now running 33 tooth front, 65 tooth pulley on the rear, and that lets me run 75 to 80 keeping my fuel mileage around 50mpg.
Mileage will be different for different riding styles, weights, roads, etc..

Something I thought about after reading more, stator may also not be supplying enough power as it’s a 2004 and has extras in the way of a stereo. Going to be testing it and possibly upgrading. I haven’t had the stumbling issue since I cleaned the carb but I’ve only done one ride since then.

Last year I had a similar issue to what you are describing. I checked everything, took the carb apart and cleaned it, adjusted the valves, I mean I went through everything. Except for one thing and that was on the front cylinder the previous owner had installed the AIS deletion. The plate that covers where the AIS system used to go, has two bolts on it. It was loose, not finger loose but loose enough that it was sucking air. My bike was also backfiring a lot too. Anyways I tightened it up and poof the problem was solved. Maybe something to look at.

ill totally check that. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s something that needs to be tightened. I feel like a lot of bolts on this need to be checked
