  • Dies occasionally around 65 - 70 MPH

Hey all. Have a gripe that I can't figure out. I'll hit around 65 to 70 MPH (doesn't seem to be a consistent "cliff" like I'm hitting a governor) and it starts to sputter like there is a fuel issue, and then ultimately coughs and sputters until I come to a complete stop. Once stopped, It will start right up (maybe given a bit of enricher to get going, but it always starts) and then I can't repeat the issue consistently.

Here's a list of what I've done to restore this bike (new to me, 27xxx miles) to operation.
    -Oil change
    -New spark plugs
    -New Fuel Pump
    -New Fuel Filter
-Rebuilt Carburetor (I'm not above saying I didn't make a mistake, but I'm quite confident I rebuilt it correctly)
-Adjusted PMS (to correct a nasty backfire that I bought it with, followed the guide here for adjustment)
    -Cleaned Air Filter (K&N)
-New Clean Fuel with a full bottle of seafoam
-Adjusted idle screw when warm to a comfortable idle.

Here's the list of AM parts that I am aware of.
    -K&N Filter (teardrop shape)
-Bub's Pipes (Full length? Definitely no baffles)
-Emissions deleted (tube on the connection between the carb and cylinder is DEFINITELY sealed)

I have the same problem when riding over mountain passes. after research it appears that with the after market exhaust and Baron jet upgrade the fuel bowl can't recover with the amount of fuel being consumed verses the small inlet with the original float bowl needle valve. It is recommended to increase the float bowl needle to 3.0 part #2C6-14190-30. It is for a 2002-2008 660 Grizzly but they use the same carburetor from what I've researched. I found one around $20.00 at Partzilla

The Grizzly valve is only used if going pumpless. It sounds like your float level may just be set to low.

Also make sure your fuel tank vent or roll over valve isn't plugged and creating a vacuum in the fuel tank .

Awesome! I'll give that a shot - I appreciate it.

Can you elaborate (preferably with pictures? I'm a crayon eater for my day job )

Read my comment above. If you are using a fuel pump you do not need a 3.0 grizzly float valve. Check the float setting it sounds like it is simply set to low.also check the little filter screen inside the carb fuel inlet. most of us just removes the screen to prevent any issues at the point.

Any tips on adjusting the float setting? Never done that before.

Go to Tech articles on this Roadstar clinic page and under categories section go to" carb/manifold/airkit". Then select "stock carburetor" and look for article titled "Change the float bowl needle valve" I think it's on page 2 and read the article it also has procedures you are looking for

I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I do have a brand new pump on it already.

It could also be that your throttle cables that run past the right side coil have worn through their insulation, and the insulation on the hot lead to the coil and it's arcing out and it's more pronounced that speed with all the wind. But it does sound like your float levels too low should be four to five millimeter above the seam on the left rear side of the carburetor. With the bike on the side stand but almost vertical. K i s s how's your air cleaner. Didn't have any squirrels moved in there, you didn't leave a rag and the intake manifold when you're doing maintenance. Sometimes a bike will break up when it's just about to switch from on to reserve on the petcock and it'll pump Air . You also want to check your battery cables ain't loose
