  • Front pulley nut

    Now I have a new problem. I need to know which way the pulley nut is supposed to go on. It has a recessed side that appears to go over the spline, but I can't seem to get it to tighten that way. Seems like there isn't enough room to fully catch with or without the washer being there. If I turn it around it seems to go on fairly well just constantly tighten and risk messing up the threads if this is not correct.

    That doesn’t look like my 2008 pulley nut.

      The recess side goes toward the pulley and up against a bendable lock washer. You need to also use red loctite on the threads and bend the washer against the flats of the nut in as many places as possible

        I tried to.put the recessed side toward the spline/pulley. However.It wouldn't grab the threads. Doesn't have enough room,.Is there a way to make sure the pulley is.proper seated, and all the way out as.It should be? I tried to use a mallet to ensure it was.properly seated. Still no luck getting it to.seat properly.

      The thread is called “broke down on the road” and it is reply #11. Says the dish side of the washer goes toward the pulley or it won’t stay tight. Then red lock tight on shaft nut. And it could have a tab type lock washer or a nut with a sleeve that faces out and gets punched down in the shaft groove
      It's not that life is so short, it's just that you're dead for so long.---unknown.

        I have a 2004 xv1700 atms.. It uses a different nut. 90179-22004. Just doesn't seem right as there isn't enough space to.get the threads to grip fully using the recessed side.

          The shaft and thread pitch are the same. socket or wrench size changed over the years, they also came out with improved nut later on.

        Could it be too many parts, like a lock washer and a locking plate? Try dry assembly, with no belt

          I think your bent washer is keeping your nut from picking up the thread. Try straightening out your lock washer

            Well I took off the washer to try it, while it gave me a little more room to access the threads it was all for not. Appears the threads are toast. It will not tighten. So now what?

              2 choices, replace the shaft or weld the nut on.

              I was unable to locate a replacement part number for the shaft, do you happen to know what it is? Do you.happen to know how labor intensive this would be?

              I would order this nut and try it before buying a new shaft! It has threads all the way thru the nut.

                And don't forget red loctite, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for use, including degreasing the shaft before application if applicable

                  No new nuts for 1600's anywhere ! What can be used for replacement ?

                    If you have the locking tab washer any nut the same size will work still include the loctite.

                      Horsehammerr, I've got a nut and locking washer for a 1600. Got it when a replaced the shaft but never used it.
                      Your's if you want it.
