Probably just a weak starter, Mine did that same thing and I messed with the decompression stuff. What finally fixed it was replacing the starter. I had the original starter rebuilt and it didn't help, but a new starter solved the problem.

mariner3302 well I'll let some other more knowledgable guys chime in....but I've seen some fairly decent running bikes for what you're asking. Add in a salvage title and it really isn't much surprise it hasn't moved.

I could see some cool potential in that if all the parts are there. But from a $$ standpoint these bikes don't command much even when they're in good running condition. Sorry man.

    Hey Fella's,
I thought I would be automatically suscribed to this thread but it didn't. Sorry 'bout that! I have it set to do it now.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions!!!
Well, I had no clue that there was a decompression solenoid! Thanks!! I had thought about that for a second but never followed up on looking. However, it turns out that is the least of my issues at the moment. After I drained a couple cups of water out of the tank, turns out it turns over better. Now, this bike was and still is a project... It ran fine when I bought it but my Mom got cancer and I left it outside for a year or two. Couple years ago, I rebuilt the carb and cleaned the intake tubes. Aaand, shit came up again and you guessed it, I left it out for a couple years. I haven't figured out how all that water gets into the tank. I sealed up the keyed gas cap and apperantly that did squat.. Anyway..
So I pulled the carb and it has tons of rust stains, screws are rusted, float valve was stuck (which explained why gas was gushing out of everywhere in the carb when I tried to start it). I have the chemdip but I am wondering if I would do better to just buy a new one? The bike has a salvage title and I am moving from SC. It really isnt my style of riding based on the little bit I did do. I have always had sport bikes and it is hard to go from one to the other. I have $2400 in it. I have it advertised at $1800 and can't seem to get rid of it. How much to drop on it is a question.
Sorry about the long post and rambling a bit. Will doing a chem-dip and rebuild do any good? Someone before me put straight pipes on and didn't rejet it. I figured that is something for after it gets back to running. I prefer a muffled exhaust. To call this old girl a beater is an understatement. Sometimes I wish a tree would fall on her but then again not. lol
Any suggestions/sage advice would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully these pitures go through. I could get the uploader to play nice. Must be a retired Marine thing lol. Weak stomachs are warned - this aint pretty!

Manually override the solenoid by pulling the lever away from the plunger by hand and try to start the bike.

What everyone is telling you is correct, the decompression solenoid. You can bend the lever, (spoon), fairly easy to adjust.

If you are unfamiliar with the decompression solenoid it is located under the cover to the left of the YAMAHA cover on the right side of your cycle. When you press the start button the plunger on the solenoid should extend out toward the exhaust pipes and rotate the "spoon" that it engages. This is designed to help the starter by opening the exhaust valves and reducing compression.

Take cover of decompression solenoid and look to see spoon is making personal contact... Also listen for click on solenoid. Also can try pushing in by hand while hitting the start button.

It’s unlikely your valves are out of wack. Make sure the decompression solenoid is engaging the spoon which opens a valve and makes it easier on the starter. You can bend the spoon. Take the starter apart, clean the crap out of it and lube it. Test the voltage of the battery when you are turning it over and report that voltage here. Install heavier starter wires that a member here makes. Make sure all wires including the ground wire from the battery to the oil tank are clean and tight.

Can't turn over - cylinder pressure?

I really don't know what to call this problem. It tries to turn over but it is like it can't because the cylinder is pushing against too much pressure. I have to bump it over and over to get it to a point that it can turn over. Maybe the valves are mistimed? That is the biggest problem I have. I have had it a few years and don't ride it mainly because of this. I would sell it if someone would buy it in theis condition... I have changed the starter, the solenoid, and the battery. I thought that did it at first but it is back to doing it again....
I know it has had the exhaust changed to straight pipes. When it does start it dies after it warms up. I am going to put baffles in and hopefully that will fix that part.
    I don't know what I don't know...
    Any help will be appreciated!
