  • Oil blowin'by my blow by.

    I rolled in to the Dawg'House & noticed two drops of oil on the shop floor. Upon closer inspection there was oil on the rear cylinder head just behind the blow by breather filter and down on to the case. There wasn't much oil not enough to be really concerned about. So I took off the blow by brether filter and cleaned it, cleaned up the surrounding area & made a note to keep an eye on it. Yesterday after about a two-hour ride all of a sudden smoke from getting on the pipes coming from the blow by filter and a lot of it. It was very hot that day I'm not sure what caused it but it seems to be fine now. Anybody got any ideas as to why oil would be blowin'by my blow by?

    Overfilling the engine with oil will do that. Put 4 quarts in at your oil change and never use the dipstick to check it. The dipstick is notoriously inaccurate and many folks are then prompted to add additional oil. It doesn't take much for it to blow it out.

      Right on! I've been thinking it shouldn't need oil as often as the dip stick tells me cause it doesn't burn oil but seems by the stick to always need a li'l ya know. The bike is new to me, only had it for about 4 months now so still figuring it out. She is a beast for sure! Thank you for your input, much appreciated!

        There is one drain plug for the engine and one drain plug for the oil tank which share the same oil. Make sure you remove both of them. Drain all the oil, replace the filter and reinstall the two plugs. Put 2 quarts into the oil tank, screw the dipstick in and run the engine for about 15 seconds. Remove the dipstick and put in the other two quarts and replace the dipstick. You are now good to go until the next oil change. These bikes do not generally leak oil and if they consume a slight amount it doesn't matter because about half of the oil is kept in the oil tank. Make sure you use a high quality synthetic motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches. Most folks here use either Mobil 1 or amsoil 20-50 V-Twin oil. A high amount of zinc is required in the oil to prevent damage to the lifters and cams. Most other oils don't have a high enough level of zinc.

          I concur with Shores. You could check your oil ten times in a row and get ten different readings. These bikes typically do not leak or use oil. Four quarts in at oil change and forget about it til the next oil change. Use the best synthetic oil you can afford with the proper ZDDP level, and these bikes will give you many miles of solid service.

            Once again...the hardest thing for me to learn when I bought my first R/S (after riding H/Ds for many years) was NOT to check the oil twice a week.
            You'll get used to it.
            I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

            If the hose from the breather, on the back head, goes straight downward to the filter, then you will get a little oil leaking from the filter.
            I've found that if you run a hose, large as you can, up to the neck, then back down to the filter, you will get less oil blowing to the filter. I think this gives a little more time for oil to separate out of the blow by, collect, and fallback down to the head.

              Yep, thinkin' that sounds like a good idea. I'm sure it was caused by owner error as I no doubt overfilled the oil tank. But the dipstick said it was next to out of oil when I checked it but that was after our ride. I've been told the dipstick lies so I'll be aware of that next time.

                You could do this, but I never do. Just ride and change the oil every 3K.
