  • Middle Drive Shaft or Clutch?

Hi All, Having some problems trying to diagnose what is going wrong with my Roadie, and need a bit of wisdom to get me pointed in the right direction.

When I give the bike 1/3 throttle or more (doesn't matter what gear), it almost feels like the drive belt is skipping. It still accelerates when this happens, but it almost feels kind of like a bicycle chain skipping a tooth on the sprocket, with an almost metallic slamming kind of sound from the left of the bike under my leg. Below 1/3 throttle, acceleration is nice and smooth, and using the tranny to aid in braking doesn't feel like anything is skipping or skipping at all.

Thanks to quite a few posts I've read so far, I did check my front drive pulley, and the nut was loose (finger tight). I torqued it back to spec, but it is still skipping at more than 1/3 or so throttle. I've also checked the rear pulley, front pulley (and the teeth under the pulley nut), and drive belt, and there are no missing teeth, and nothing looks worn down to the point it would cause this. I also checked for the red dust on or near the front pulley, but living out in the country, there was just enough grime that I couldn't tell if it was red or not. Does this sound like my loose front pulley has possibly messed up the middle drive shaft?

    Belt at proper tension?
Worn clutch doesn't make that sound....

Forgot to mention it, but yes, the belt is at 8-9mm of play with the wheel on the ground.

I did also find out that the transmission recall was never done on my bike. I don't think that it would have anything to do with my issue from reading other posts, but I figured I should mention that as well. I'm already planning on getting that taken care of quick, fast, and in a hurry, just in case. I had my old panhead's tranny completely lock up at 80+ quite a few years ago, and have no desire to have that experience again.

Trans recall is something you should address now. Not later. Trailer bike to dealership and have them do the recall. Do not start or attempt to ride it. Make sure they do upgraded oil pump gear (may cost you a small amount of $). I assume you bike is 99-03 model?

Yep, mine is an 01. Bought it used in 04-05 (I'm guessing after the recall notices went out), and had no clue about it until I signed up on here and started reading forum posts. The bike is staying parked until I figure out my "skipping issue" and get the recall done. I'm hoping that if I did mess up the middle drive shaft or something along those lines, that it won't cost me quite as much in labor to get it done at the same time as getting the recall taken care of (probably wishful thinking, but oh well). Is there anything else that I should check that might be causing my issue before I'm able to get it into the shop for the recall fix?

did you pull the front pulley off to completely inspect all of the spline on the pulley and the shaft? To me that is what it sounds like. It sounds like the splines on 1 or the other is worn from the loose pulley nut. Also inspect the belt to see if there are any worn spots or pc's missing or just abnormal wear from caused by a loose pulley.

So, just a stab in the dark sort of. When you accelerate what gear are you in? If your in 5th gear and accelerating from 55mph it will do what you describe, or if your lugging and try to accelerate with out shifting down it will do that.

He mentioned ‘any gear’ in the first post.

Fist thing I’d check, and it’s a simple procedure, is to
check the transfer case for any oil. Been a rash of threads as of late about a worn out hy-vo chain in there jumping teeth ‘cuz many has never serviced it. They only hold about 6 ounces of gear oil to lube two big bearings and the drive chain.

Is that one looking a little loose?

That one is looking a lot loose.

The guy that posted the picture on RSC FB page deemed it loose. It was jumping teeth. It was out of oil for no telling how long. Neglected.

Thanks for the input everyone! You guys are awesome!

Bikerron, on your advice, I went ahead and pulled the transfer case cover off. I was almost bone dry, so apparently it has been leaking fluid from somewhere for quite a while. It looks like I've got quite a bit of play in the chain, like your "before" picture. Is this likely what is causing my skipping problem? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but would the safe bet be to replace middle drive shaft/belt pulley on opposite side, primary chain, gear coming off the tranny, and all the seals/bearings and such in between?

On another note, I called to try to get the transmission recall taken care of, and apparently Yamaha is no longer authorizing the recall work. Is there a way to get around this? The NHTSA is showing this recall as a safety issue, so should Yamaha still cover these?

Wow! You weren’t kidding about being out of oil.

Hey Bikerron, just wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I replaced everything from the front transfer case sprocket back to the drive belt (after waiting a month for parts to come in), and my roadie is back up, and running like a greased pig!

I read that Yamaha was not doing the recall as of several months ago however due to safety concerns I cannot see how they cannot do the recall. I would call Yamaha directly and let them know that you're afraid for your life due to issues with your bike etc etc.
