  • Fowling plugs

    Ihave a 2002 Yamaha Roadstar xv1600
    I have been fouling plugs like mad. All the emission control components have been deleted on my bike several years ago. I haven't had any problems up until now. when they installed my stereo they jumped into the wire for the high beams under the dash so I'm wondering if that could have caused something to go wrong. If anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

    Pic of the plugs you pulled out? Brand/model of plugs?
    Last time airfilter was replaced?
    What kind of air intake system (stock or aftermarket)?
    Miles on bike? Year? Jetting in carb? Exhaust system?

        Don't know if a weak ignition system (ie failing coils) would get the plugs looking that nasty...? Dave?

        I would think cleaning/inspecting carb would be first step given what you mentioned above

          I'll rebuild the carburetor and see if that works

            Look at the carb to see what jets are in there. Don't be to concerned about coils.

          Might need to be sure the enrichener/choke is not hanging up..hooking up a stereo won't affect that...You said you have a new intake manifold. maybe carb was previously jetted to compensate and now is too rich...

            have you been riding this bike for a few years and all of the sudden this started? You also say you have stock V&H straight pipes. That is not a stock pipe it is an aftermarket pipe. What air cleaner do you have on it? The stock airbox? the stock airbox with a K/N air filter or an aftermarket K/N sytle open air filter? All this makes a difference in how to proceed with the jetting. It don't have anything to do with a stereo install. I will say tapping into a headlight circuit is pretty stupid. Now if the radio screws up for some reason you lose your lights when the fuse blows.

              I've had this bike for 10 years. Like I said I've never had a problem. The carburetor has never been rebuilt. I talked to the guy that had it before me he bought it new he never had to do any carburetor work. The choke works great. Already checked to see if that's hanging up and it's working fine. It has the stock air cleaner box and I ordered the air filter from Yamaha.

                My first thought would have been enricher hanging up as well. But sounds like you've checked that already. How is it running? Did you pull the plugs as course of maintenance or hunting a drive-ability issue?

                  It runs good up to about 50mph
                  then I start fowling plugs
                  Almost feels like I have push back
                  Power drops off and I have to down shift to regain power. If I shut off the fuel it picks back up a little until I run out of fuel of course. When I turn the fuel back on it does ok for a minute then power drops off again.
                  I pulled the plugs troubleshooting the problem.

                    For some reason you are getting to much fuel in the float bowl. Maybe the oring on the float valve seat is leaking by or the needle/seat itself is leaking. It is flooding out and making it run rich. I would also verify that the float setting is correct. 1 more thing you can do for a test is to run a fuel line from the tank straight to the carb bypassing the fuel pump. This will test that the fuel pump is working correctly and shutting off when the bowl is full. I'm not sure what controls the fuel pump pressure and shuts it off but if the pressure is high it could be blowing the needle/seat open with pressure.

                      Specs on the pump is 2.1 to 2.8 psi and say top of fuel at highest point in the tank to carb inlet say 12” (0.433 psi per foot) would give 3.233 psi +/-.

                    10 years no carb rebuild, u luckee dawg, times up, check the enricher cable too, make sure one end is working with the other end properly , it can stick inside carb and over-choke

                      if dave says it, its gospel. coils will only fail one at a time, anyway, and generally only if u leave wire disconnected from a plug or ground while engine runs, dont ask, but did uou check your battery cables aint loosed up?
