    What am I missing? I have fuel getting through, I have sparks, compression and the bike cranks well. It just wont fire. If I leave it for a few days then it might start as soon as I hit the button. Is there something else on these bikes that could prevent starting?

    What is your starting procedure? If you are twisting the throttle before trying to start you are flooding it and after a couple days the plugs are drying out enough to start the bike. Also make sure the battery is fully charged.

      How are you checking fuel getting in? Are the plugs wet with fuel? have you taken off the air filter and seen fuel come out of the accelerator pump? If you have spark and fuel in the cylinder it should fire.

        Never give it any throttle when starting. It has always been a brilliant starter, hit the button and it ticks over beautifully. Yes, air filter off and can see accelerator pump spraying fuel. Battery is good and engine turns fine. I have been building bikes for best part of 50 years but this has me stumped!

          Leave the throttle alone, pull the choke (enricher) all the way out to start bike, hold it out with a clothes peg if it won't stay on it's own until you get it adjusted properly so it stays out on it's own, now try to start bike.

            Fuel tank vent may be clogged. Try removing gas cap and see if it starts. It's a longshot, yes, but it's free and easy to try and eliminates one more thing.

              Fuel spark and compression is all you need. Something with one of those 3 things is wrong. Pull the 2 outside plugs and see if they are wet. If so spray them with starting fluid and then hit them with a propane torch to dry and heat. Reinstall pull the choke and it should start if you have fuel spark and compression.

                what about crank sensor? any history with those? I've tried all the obvious stuff. like I said, been building bikes for 50 years so I am not a novice, just not over familiar with the XV1600.

                  What is cranking voltage at the battery? Did you pull a plug and ground the electrode to see if you have spark? Never heard of a crank sensor on a Road Star...could be bad pick up coil (had that with similar symptoms) on a vstar 650.

                    Anything with TCI controlled ignition uses a pick up coil, they can be mounted on anything that rotates, on a roadstar its inside the clutch cover on my vstar it was inside the stator cover some cars have them in the distributor, its just a reference signal the ecm uses

                  crank sensor is pick up. What do you have on those?

                    if the crank sensor /pick up coil whatever you want to call it was bad you wouldn't have spark.

                      Not necessarily, it could still be giving a signal, but at the wrong time.

                    Sorted it. Stripped the carb and found a lot of condensation. Kinda makes sense as I ran the carb dry to fit some new fuel lines before this problem began. Very cold in the work shop at the moment so I guess leaving the carb dry for a week or so is something to avoid in future.

                          In davej’s defense, I don’t see how the ignition pickup could jump time and give a false signal. The magnetic sensor has no adjustment and the reluctor ring is keyed to the crankshaft. Both are fixed. They’re either sending a signal, on cue, or not at all. It’s at the ECU’s discretion when setting any variances in the timing and are influenced by the;

                          Throttle position sensor, which works like the old vacuum advance- only electronically retards the timing with more throttle, and...

                          RPMs, that were once controlled, in the olden days, by spring loaded weights that advanced the timing as the RPMs increased, but now done by a chip.

                          Modern marvels.
