  • Intake manifold question

I pulled my carb off to replace the Accel pump rod set and readjust the linkage to reduce the squirt and replace the coaster enrichener cover. While I have the carb off I looked inside of the manifold. I understand the manifold is metal with a rubber coating inside and out. The inside has the usual cracks but on the rear cylinder tube, in the area around the vacuum port, I have some rubber thats missing. It looks like its a 1/8' patch thats missing and adjacent to that is another the same size. When I stuck my finger in there to feel around (no smart ass comments please) another small piece came out. I know that cant be good for performance and certainly not good for the intake valve, piston and exhaust valve if that rubber gets hammered with the valves. I have heard of cracks before but nothing about pieces coming off of the inside of the manifold. What do you think/ Do I have a problem that needs immediate attention or not? I dont really want to spend time porting the manifold to clean out the rubber coating. I am open to suggestions before I reinstall the carb. Thanks guys.

I would just replace the intake manifold and be done with it.

What daveJ said, blow the cobwebs off of $80 to $120 bucks and be done with that manifold. It's to far gone.

Sorry to HACK into this post , but on another subject . What should I look into for the cause of my " Low Fuel " green light not coming on after going Pumpless ?

The light itself is electric and should have nothing to do with going pumpless. Now if you are saying you have to switch to reserve before the light comes on that would be a common thing after going pumpless. some have to go to reserve about 1/4 tank. If this is the issue I believe the fix is to cut down the petcock tube. I'm not sure how much to cut off but maybe someone that has done it will jump in with that info.

Cut it down to about 2" long, or drill and install a .345" tube.

I wonder if your replacement Petcock is the answer to this problem , Duke ?

It works great in both of my bikes. No issues and plenty of fuel.

Thanks for your input guys. All of my other carb parts arrived today. Now I have to get a carb joint. As was mentioned, the PN for the 04-07 is 5VN-13586-01-00. Pre 04 joints are 4WM-13586-01-00. I read on the Road Star riders forum that many Yam PN's are interchangeable from year to year IF the base numbers are the same. The only difference is the PN prefix that indicates the year.
IOW, 5VN-XXX-XXX is the same as 4WM-XXX-XXX, Does anyone know this to be true??
If it is I plan to order this: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-4WM135...0CMJ4D42JK4J8S

Product description says JOINT, CARBURETOR 1 Manufactured by Yamaha Part #: 4WM-13586-01-00 Replaces , 4WM-13586-01-00, 4WM-13586-00-00
                What do you think?

There is a difference in the manifold. 1999 to 2003, 1600s are different than the 2004 to 2007, 1700s. Make sure your getting the 5vn.

Okay. Thanks Duke. I'll order the 5VN number. You wouldnt happen to know what the difference is would you? The ports look the same and they use the same O ring PN. Maybe the angle between the cylinders? IDK but I am curious. I guess the thread I read about base part numbers being the same doesnt hold water then.

The bolt hole patterns are different, and I think the angles are slightly different too, not sure.

Thats the only thing I could think of. Thanks again Duke. I'll be back if I have any more questions.
