    What's the average cranking compression on a 2000 1600 roadstar? I'm trying to check and see why it's so hard to start.

    Define "Hard to Start".
    Cranking slow?
    Is the battery decent? What are the at rest volts after 24 hours, and the voltage drop, when you press the start button?
    Is the idle set properly? An idle set to low, will result in a lean mix when the bike needs more fuel.
    Are the connections tight for the battery? Not just those on the battery, but the other end of the cables as well. Both the pos and neg.
    Is the bike in neutral?
    Is the starter dirty? They can get pretty crudy on the inside, and cause a slow crank situation.
    Are you using the Enricher properly for cold starts, regardless of the temps. Cold being longer then a few hours. The motor has returned to room temp.

      Its cranking slow. Starts and runs fine.
      battery is new and connections are good..
      I was told today that if it had the high compression pistons in it it would crank like that... so that's why I was asking about the cranking compression

        According to the service manual:

        Min: 142 psi
        Standard: 171 psi
        Max: 199 psi

        The compression is high enough that we need a decompression system to relieve the cylinder pressure during start up. If the decompression solenoid is sticking or failed then the bike will be difficult or impossible to start. The solenoid and levers are located under a cover on the right side of the motor. The solenoid is #1 in this diagram. The levers are #4. If you remove the cover and then try to start the engine the solenoid should activate and push the levers in toward the engine. If they don't move, or they don't move in completely then the solenoid is bad.

        Or it could be that your starter is weakening. Some people install a Warrior starter as an upgrade. It's stronger than ours.

        Or it could be a weak battery. Have you load tested the battery?

        Or it could be fuel related. Is the enricher working correctly?

        When you say it's hard to start, do you mean it won't start sometimes? Or that it does start eventually, but it has a hard time? Has it always been hard to start, or just recently? Did you make any changes around the time that starting got harder?

          It's always been hard to start. As in the starter acts like it struggles. I'll get the decompression stuff checked out. And may look into the warrior starter. Is it a bolt on starter or do I have to do anything else to make it work

            Like the article says you can also look at upgrading the starter cables to a heavier gauge. I'm not sure who on the forum is making them now, if anyone. But they carry more current then the stock cables.

              Do you have high compression pistons? What’s the weather temperature in your area and what weight oil are you using?

                Stock compression 8.4 should equate to about 125 psi on a compression test.

                14.7 (atmospheric pressure) x 8.4 = about 123-125 psi.

                  Atmospheric pressure and cylinder compression psi are not directly related like that.

                Your idle being set too low and the throttle plate closed too tight can make it hard starting.


                Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

                  I'm not sure if it has high compression or not. That's actually what I'm trying to figure out. Just got the bike back. Owned it a few years ago and sold it. Its always been hard to start even before. May look into the warrior starter for sure. I'm hoping it has the hc pistons.. lol

                    Check the PSI and report back. Both cylinders. We'll figure it out.

                  I do have the 10.25 HC pistons in one of mine, and having the idle set correctly was very important. I even moved it closer to the 950rpms, suggested as the max in the Yamaha manual.
                  When it starts, it tends to wind up, unlike the almost instant on of my other Roadie.
                  My experience with the over the counter batteries at AutoZone(ready to go AGM’s) haven’t been that great. Although they brag about 310CCA, they haven’t held up well. I have a 270CCA battery from Sears that I had to add the acid to and charge. I’ve been much happier with it. Simply tossing this in, to encourage you to check the voltages on your battery, as mentioned above.
                  Not just after you take it off the charger or get back from a ride, but after it has sat for a day, and also check it under the starter load and see how much it drops.

                      I had similar issues, found my decomp spoon slightly bent so I bent it back straight. Started better but still slow. Took my starter apart and found the brushes inside broken. Replaced starter assy but could have just done brush kit on factory starter. Bike starting great now. Good luck.

                              If you decide to upgrade to the larger size battery cable just let me know I make and sell them. $45 shipped in the U.S. They do help as long as the starter is OK Also just taking the back plate off the starter and cleaning out all the carbon dust, cleaning the commutator check the brushes (replace if needed) will fix starting issues and is an inexpensive and easy job.

                                Will the warrior starter work on a 1600? Just checking, mine is slow to start as well, like the starter is working it's ass off. I will check the decompression solenoid tonight. I may have to get some cables from you Dave
                                All these extra nuts and bolts go somewhere... oh well, I'll figure it out later.

                                    I took the starter apart last night, cleaned the contacts with contact cleaner, put it together and it is 100% better, Thanks for the advice Dave, but cables may still be in the future, we shall see.
                                    All these extra nuts and bolts go somewhere... oh well, I'll figure it out later.

                                      Get the cables. It's a big motor, and it pulls some juice when it turns over. ;^)
