  • 200 rear tire

I tried looking in the fat tire section and tried multiple searches but came up empty handed. I have a bare frame and swingarm I want to put a 180 or if possible 200 rear tire. The frame is a 2003 if it makes a difference. Do I just need a certain width rim, or will the swingarm need to be modified. I'm sorry if this information is already somewhere.
    thanks,
    Rob

A 180 will fit the stock rim but you wont get the width your after. The tire will be squeezed so it will be taller. Also a 180 will need sub frame grinding and a 200 will need a new wider fender. A 180 tire should have a 5" or so rim.

You can squeeze a 200 in there but like Smokescreens said, there will be grinding involved on the subframe.
You also don't really see the full width of the tire since it'll be pinched at the bead by the narrow stock rim.
You'll also need to either grind down the rear brake stay on both the swingarm and the caliper bracket as well as the bolt holding them together.

Any wider with your rear wheel and you can run into clearance issues for the belt unless you convert to chain & sprockets.
You'll also need to offset the front sprocket either by building your own or using an offset front output shaft.

      It's all possible but it's not a bolt-on 1 hour job.
That's why you don't see many setup with big fat rear tires.

        I ran a 200R50-18
required a widened fender, Front inside edge of brake stay ground off, 5.5" wide wheel. The belt will run about 1/4" off the tire depending on tire brand.

Can you specify where you got your rim and what tire you are running? This is what I am wanting to do. What fender did you go with, did you have to remove the fender subframe? Any pics available?

        I'm running a 180/55/18 on a 5.5 wheel. I had to grind the brake stay a bit..

Are you running the stock fender and swing arm on this setup?

I would like to piggy back on this topic. I have a 99 roadstar that I want to mod out. What is the widest wheel/tire combination I can put in the factory swing arm with the rear fender and fender subframe removed? I don't mind minor mods to the swing arm (as noted by onebadd68 regarding grinding the brake stay), I just don't want to replace the swing arm and want to maintain the factory belt and pulley system unless I absolutely have to change them. I will be replacing the fender assembly completely. Goal is a 200 if at all possible.

200 is doable. without the fender & subframe, you'll just need to grind the brake stay.
If you go with an aftermarket HD wheel & tire you'll need to either change to axle bolt or use bushings, and also use some axle spacers.

How did you attach your fender? What height wheel did you use and what was your logic behind it? Any issues with pulley/belt alignment? Factory or another brake caliper?

I ran a 200/55r18. Tight but doable. Subframe and fender widened. Wheel was aftermarket HD. 18x5.5. used a HD disc with R* caliper. Belt was running about 3/16" off the tire. Brake ground off on front inside corner.
fender and wheel setup was done by the previous owner. Only thing I didn't like about was the fender and subframe where rendered inseparable.

Im running a 200/50 vr16 Avon Cobra Chrome on the stock rear wheel, no grinding, no problems. Has been awesome rubber so far(1500+/-miles)no hint of sliding out from under me, and I'm always getting my money's worth from sidewall to sidewall! Oh, I have same tire on front too..

Why would you have problems, No fender or subframe on your bike. Apples to Oranges.
