    Rear brake pad replacement

Changing front pads was a breeze but the rear might be a challenge. Is it possible to remove rear caliper without removing the exhaust? Is there enough room? 2005 Road Star xv1700a OEM exhaust. If needed I will remove the exhaust but typically in my experience, unnecessary disassembly can open a can of worms; broken bolts, replacing gaskets etc…, especially disassembling exhaust. So!, any members with same model, can you share your experience please?

If you can’t get to the caliper bolts..the exhaust has to come off..at that point it’s
    now neccesary
Depending on your exhaust, you might have to remove it to obtain access to the rear caliper. Remove the two caliper mounting bolts (12 mm hex head socket)

I was able to get the retaining pin out and change the pads out while the caliper was still in place. I started with the rear and the assumption I needed to remove the caliper. I couldn't get the mufflers to release from the header pipes and was dreading pulling it all off. Then I realized I could do it all in place. Wasn't too difficult at all.

I was concerned that removing that exhaust might be an issue. I’ll give that a try, pulling retaining pins out first. I can also remove the rear muffler bracket screws to get a little play??

DWD6955 yes the muffler bracket screws will allow just a little movement if necessary. I don't remember if I did this when trying to remove the caliper or if I needed the space for the retaining pin. I think it when I was trying to remove the caliper. So I don't think you'll need to do this.

After removing saddle bag and bracket I had more room than anticipated. The caliper top screw will not come all the way out (hits the muffler bracket) but far enough to remove the caliper after removing the bottom caliper screw all the way out. After that it was a matter of maneuvering the caliper to take out the clips and replacing pads. I’m sure at one point and time I will have to remove the mufflers but I’m glad I didn’t have to for this task. Thanks for the tips men!
