Heavy duty valve springs

I installed Orient Express heavy duty valve springs with my R* rebuild, what I am hearing is increased metallic rattle on acceleration from 80kmh (50mph) in top gear.

Don't hear it at any other time, although the hearing isn't the best.

Question is, do the Road Stars rattle more with the heavy duty springs?

This is the first time that I have altered the valve train on a push rod motor

Forgot to add, I adjuster the tappets so they were just touching when cold

The springs would not make a difference in noise. must be the adjustment. Look up the spec and set them with a feeler gauge and like the manual says, step by step.
did you install High compression pistons? If so do you have a dyna 3000 to change the timing to a less aggressive curve? If you installed HC pistons you might be hearing spark knock.

Set your valves at .002 cold.

Running a Dynatek 3000 module set at 32A and 5000 rpm.

The bike has Patrick Racing 10.25:1 high comp pistons.

l will re-set the valve clearance next week with my first service

Your issue is that you are using the "A" settings. Use the "B" curve setting, 32 º should be OK but it must be on the "B" curve with HC pistons.

OK.... got a question about valve spring change.

When I changed the valve springs for the heavy duty OE springs I changed out all the springs for the new ones.

Do the inner springs stay with the new springs?

Whenever I have done a valve spring upgrade I usually take out all the old valve spring setup and just use the new springs.

My question is why are you changing out your valve springs?
Did you receive the new HD springs with both inner and outer springs? If you received both, then you would change to the new, "inner & outer" as a set.
The only reason to put HD springs in a Road Star engine, is due to a install of performance cams. Heavier springs are harder on your hole valve train causing higher friction, and tend to reduce the cam & lifter life, especially the 1600 RS. 1600s have a bigger rocker ratio which puts more strain on the push rods, lifters and cams to begin with, let alone putting HD valve springs on. I was told that the 1600 rocker ratio is 1.6 to 1, but all of my measurments have proven to be 1.9 to 1 ratio. In 2004, Road Stars went with the 1700 and made the rocker ratio 1.4 to 1, this helps put less stress on the valve train.

I went with the HD valve springs as I was porting and polishing the heads and decided to put them in at the same time.

The Orient Express HD springs don't have an inner spring like the standard Road Star 1600, so I presumed that was all that was needed for the upgrade

I'm not sure on the inner springs, maybe davej will know. I believe he has those springs in his bike.
