  • 1600 Valve guide seals

    Need some input on a 2003 Midnight with 43,000 miles. It's smoking burnt oil at take off from a stop and during deacceleration. I removed the cylinders and checked the piston rings. I noticed the bottom oil rings clocked at 11-2 on both pistons. Reclocked. I checked the valves and noticed some traces of oil inside the intake port sitting on top of the valve head but only on 1 of the 2 intake valves in each head and nothing on the exhaust valves. How long should valve guide seals last? And could if be possible that the oil rings were not clocked properly (from a previous installation) with the openings too close together and the oil is getting passed? Thanks.

    do you still have the rubber vent hose from the rear cylinder connected to the air cleaner?

      Yes It was until i took it apart. Could that be the problem? Looking at that now and see oil dripping from the end of that hose that connects to the air breather. Just finished testing the valve guide seals and they don't seem to be leaking when applying oil into the valve springs and pushing down on the valve. No trace of oil inside the intake.

        Remove the breather tube from the airbox and that will keep the oil out of the intake. Now your smoke is probably jetting. Have you or anyone else been inside of the carb? Here is a link to read about where to relocate the breather tube.

          I checked the jet and its a 35. I have a factory air filter with Vance and Hines Long shot pipes. should that jet be a different size with the aftermarket pipes?

        Ok great i will try that. Nobody has touched the carb. What do i do with the open nipple on the air box? Just leave it? Thank you Dave.

          You need to plug the nipple on the back of the air box if you remove the breatheter hose so that it doesn't suck unfiltered air.

          As Shores said plug it. You can buy a vacuum cap assortment at the auto parts store and there is 1 in the package that will fit. It's also a good time to install a new cap on the intake manifold nipple that the AIS was connected to. If the AIS has been removed

        Ok great thanks will do. I removed the AIS in March so the manifold rubber cap is fairly new.
