  • tightening upper head covers

    Hi. I'm about to adjust valve clearance for the first time. Trying to think in advance about tightening upper head covers after i make adjustments. I wonder how you guys tighten bolts that are located right under the frame, with a specific torque? There is not enough room to access them with a torque wrench. Are there any tricks? XV1600

    Just use an "L" Allen key and make them good and snug. It's what I've always done and it works fine, no leaks.

      so, you tighten bolts by hand wth a feeling of 10 Nm?

      Like dave said, just make sure they're snug without over tightening. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern and re-check a couple times after each pass.

    How many miles on your bike? There's really no need to make any adjustment. They are rarely out and everything is compensated for with the hydraulic lifters. Everyone tries to chase the noise. They're just noisy engines. I tried to adjust mine twice and it's no better. If you feel you have to, make sure you spray the gaskets with permatex copper gasket spray to prevent any possible leaks. torque the bolts that you can with a torque wrench and snug the other two or three down by hand.

        The adjustment isn't a valve adjustment like what you may be thinking. The adjustment is just a valve synchronizing adjustment. We have a 4 valve head with only 2 valve adjusters per head. 1 valve per side (Intake/exhaust) is not adjustable because the adjustment is controlled with the hydraulic lifter, The 2nd intake/exhaust valve has an adjuster on it to synchronize it's opening to the hydraulic lifter controlled side. Really not to much to see or do in there. Unless you are just bored and curious.

          My bike was assembled from crap by previous owner. All bolts on engine are "touched". I'm not really shure that everything was done rght, so i'm curious a bit. I got you on torqueing head covers. What about tightening locknuts on adjusting screws with 20Nm? Should I tighten them by hand also? No room for torque wrench

            Any place that you can't get a tq wrench into to tighten just gets done by hand. You should be able to get a pretty good idea of how hard you pulled the tq wrench on the ones you could get it on and just go by that feel. I will say that be careful not to over tighten the valve cover bolts, they are threaded into aluminum and will strip very easy if overtightened.

              by the way, what sze is the square on valve adjustment bolt - 3.5 or 4 mm? I'm tryng to find a proper valve wrench. The socket is 10mm, what should be the square size?

                I turned mine with my fingers once i loosened the lock nut. Then I held it with a small pair of vice grips to tighten the lock nut.
