  • Problem with buffering

    Hi all,
    I have the 1600 Silverado. Im back on bike after 15years so feels like new driver tbh. Would like to ask you for some tips how do you manage the wind pressure on your bike. I have the original Silverado windshield and if im driving around 60-70mph the wind is hardly manageable. My head is shaking like crazy and giving me hard time to focus on the road.
    I tried to change the windshield position up and down but nothing seems to help. If its up Im getting to much wind from bottom (going under my lid) and at this position I have to look through the windshield and it was difficult in any kind of rain.
    With the second option the windshield down I have the mentioned "buffering" .
    Any tips what to try please?
    whats your usual speed on the bike? Do you drive on motorway as well?

    I take the I-65 to Indianapolis and a lot of the drive is like 75mph. I have a windshield that is a bit too short for me. My forehead catches some wind and rattles my noggin pretty hard. Even worse when I took the windshield off. Nothing has been better for any bike I’ve driven than a nice aerodynamic full face helmet. I’d say that would help a ton.

      You need lowers. Make them yourself or buy these made by a member here. Also, if you have that stock filler piece of plastic that contours around the headlight, pull it back some with a string attached to the handlebars to create a vent. This will decrease the air pressure behind the windshield.

        Cheers guys. A lot inspiration here. Shores I dont have the stock filler piece. Never seen them on any bike. Who is making the lovers here mate please?

          On opening up the headlight filler, I put a piece of folded top grain cowhide in there on each side and it works wonders. Better than lowers, IMO, but I’m in Texas and I am not a fan of blocking my air flow for 8 or 9 months out of the year.


          Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

                  I've never found a remedy for me, I have lowers and have tried different positions for the shield. I still get horrible buffeting on the highway, a full face helmet does help some though. Basically I just leave the windshield off, it looks better anyway.

                    KCpartsguy- Placement of the lowers is important. They have to be low enough so their bottom is about even with the top of the lower fork tube. A gap between he top of the lowers and the bottom of the windshield doesn't matter all that much. I know because I designed my own, based on Curt's design, and I made sure there was no gap between the windshield and lower, but I still got lots of buffeting. Then I lowered them and buffeting went away, even with a gap. And those wedge shaped chrome HD lowers don't work either, I know because I've tried them too. Trust me, if done right, fork mounted wind deflectors work wonders.

                      +1 on the lowers. These bikes are very uncomfortable to ride without them.

                                Forgot to say mine have cut outs for the narrowed turn signals I made. You may have to modify the pattern. Make a cardboard template first to fit your front end before you cut any polycarbonate. Don’t use acrylic.

                                      I have an original set from Curt (same as the eBay set) with the cut outs to clear the engine guards and I’m a believer.

                                      The buffeting has been minimized.

                                        I don't like buffering either.. I ride mostly touring, I avoid city riding at all costs... Mostly on open highway... My bike is set up so I am comfy at any speed. I am no spring chicken, and comfort is a high priority. I know I will get questions about the leathers on the crash bars, but when hot my feet go up on them It took me about a year to get this thing the way I want it. I can ride in high winds with a ball cap on!!.. Click image for larger version
