Hey guys, I have questions about the AIS I see in these forums from time to time. Before I knew about this site, I had already gone pumpless and figured out I didn't need to vent the cap as the tank has a wonderful vent. I have also done one other thing, I melted a large vacuum/vent looking tube on the bike that ran from the front to the carb area. I didn't know what it was so I removed it and some box that accompanied it. Is there a proper way to remove and block AIS? I've looked for AIS in the search and it comes up empty.

The general procedure is the same for all years. The specific procedure and parts, block off plates 04- 07 vs 99-03 block off plugs will be different. Block off plates 04-07 can be easily fabricated and 45 cal brass can be used instead of buying plug kit 99-03.

Thanks guys, One more question, Will this result in non-venting of crankcase gases (like blocking off the PCV valve system in a car)???

The crankcase vent is routed to the intake boot and shouldn't be affected when removing the AIS. Some have redirected it using CCV filter and blocking off the intake.

No, the AIS merely dumps outside air into the exhaust ports AFTER the valves. Doesn’t change venting or fuel air mixture. Crankcase vent tube connects from rear valve cover to back of intake box on a stock system. Most folks re route it to another filter so oil fumes aren’t put through the carb.

It is part of the pollution control system on these bikes.

In this pic you can see the separate filter I have for my crank cases. It matches my K&N air filter. I'm happy with the performance and the look.

I was not so keen on 45cal but buying stuff in oz from usa is really expensive.

With the .45 spent cartridge does it need to be cut/shortened or just straight in ?

                Thanks OnOn Wobbly

Just measure what you pull out, but no never heard of cutting them down as they are handgun round casings.

Put them in the freezer overnight. Then pound them straight in. No need to cut them down.

It all depends on the 45 casing you have. If you have a 45 long colt it is about 1 1/4 inches long and might need to be cut down. If you have a 45ACP they are just under an inch long and pound right in flush. Click image for larger version

The .308, .253, 7mm.08 cartridges cut down works as well if you are having trouble getting a .45 cartridge.

That is a popular bolt face, it was based on the size of the old 7mm Mauser round. The US borrowed that size when they made the 1903 rifle chambered in 30.06. A lot of rounds are based on that parent case.

Is there any reason they have to be cut down at all? I think having a .45 round casing, or any other round, sticking out of my engine, might be pretty cool.

FYI, we have extra .45 brass casings laying around somewhere, last I recall. I knew where they were when living in Vegas, but since the move north they're likely buried in a box somewhere in my warehouse. I have zero need for them, no plans on reloading, so would be happy to mail some out if I can dig them out, should anyone need any. Less than $3 to mail them out inside the USA, more elsewhere. I've been shipping worldwide for more than two decades.

I'm not sure if they would stick out or not that is why I said "Might". If they stick out and you are good with it then everything is OK.
