  • Who can copy my key?

Got an 07 Midnight a few weeks ago. One of the things I addressed was a sticky gas cap (WD 40 on the wings seems to have solved that). First time it happened though I damn near snapped the key off. I was able to keep it straight and working, but it got me thinking about a copy. I doubt I’m dealing with a chip key, so I figured one of the big box hardware stores should be able to take care of me. No joy at the blue one and the orange one. Before I burn more time at more hardware stores, it feels like I’m missing some info. Do I need to go somewhere specific? Buy a specific blank?

There is something special or unique about our keys. Find the largest, oldest, busiest locksmith shop in the largest city or town near you. In my case I called around and the “ big” shop asked me to send photos of both sides of the original key. They were able to verify that they had the proper blank and they cut a perfect match.

Any “good” locksmith / lock shop will have the blank..it won’t be just like OEM..those blanks you can get on Amazon
I just had 2 made. Older established places will have it..don’t bother with Home Depot or Walmart. The shoulder and blade of the key are *special

As mentioned, you can get the blanks online. I purchased 2 blanks that match the style key I have. When I bought my bike the seller gave me a new blank. The local ACE Hardware tried to cut it but it snagged and bent it. So while it works it's not as smooth as the original. So I got new blanks and will have a professional locksmith cut one.

I picked up a Road Star recently from the original owner. He still had the bill of sale and it had a key # on the invoice. I was able to order a second key already cut from a vendor on Ebay.

I usually just order new keys from a vender on eBay. It's important to have that key number.

Just checked my gas cap key cover and it's not under there. Where else could it be? My bike is a 99, if that matters

It was my understanding that they put it on all years. I removed the cap flipped open the key cover and looked on the bottom side of the cover and it was there in plain sight, Maybe they didn't put it on the first year bikes. It would be interesting to know if there were early years without it.

Typically it’s on a dog tag that would have come with the key..or the owners manual

No key code or dog tag on my 2001 RS Silverado. Worried the only key would break or get lost. Bought two Ilco blanks on line $10/ea. Called a locksmith and he directed me to an old hardware store in Charlotte, NC (Potts) and they cut them for me for $2/key. They work great.

If you are worried then why don't you go for having a spare one. Look for a locksmith company in your area and ask them to make a spare key of Silverado. Get a couple of keys and use it in replace of the original one. In that way you can keep it safe and use the spare one.
