  • Clutch replacement question

Going to be throwing a new set of plates in the roadie next week... noticed it slipping when you do a hard throttle dig on the highway, so I was wondering....the r* has the same basic clutch assembly as the venture and 1st gen VMAX, and on these bikes, the inner most friction and steel plate are retained by a thin wire clip(we affectionately call this the "bastard wire" in the xvz forums

Grrrr... My posts keep getting cut off!!... Is there a downside to omitting this wire on reassembly??

I will leave the wire off and replace the Spring cup and spacer and small friction disk with a full size friction disk. Has worked well for me on multiple bikes.. You absolutely positively have to upgrade your clutch diaphragm Spring or it will slip again. II have done the Barnett which is great and the PCW/EB C Which is good and also have doubled up on the stock diaphragm Spring which makes for a stiff clutch Pull but works great is right. I have done this Double D mod on my gen 1 vmax and 3 road stars with great success.

      What year is your bike?

You should measure the thickness of the friction discs to see if they are within specs before you assume they are bad. A lot of folks just replace the spring. OEM discs are the best if you go that route. Definitely install the Barnett spring conversion.

The Barnett pressure plate kit is in the works, but it's gonna be a month or so....had to buy a new pair of shoes for the "chonky glide"( name bestowed on the roadie by a coworker) and a few other things...paid almost double for my brake and clutch hose fittings for running all plumbing in the bars cause drag has been backordered for months

most of the time, its the weak OEM clutch spring plate has lost its spring, its sprung, so measure the discs B4 wasting money.
I understand some just take a 2nd OEM clutch spring plate, and piggy back it next to other ????
am i correct, what effect does this have, on clutch pull, etc., i did 2 barnetts tthis year, and my 05 is "signing" of a need.

The dbl spring will work (at least for the short term) but it is my opinion that the throw out bearing will never hold up to the extra pressure put on it with the dbl spring. Just install a Barnett and get it over with 1 time.

Its a bit stiffer than Barnett clutch pull for sure...you using two USED diaphragm springs piggy backed. In the Vmax community its the preferred clurch mod especially for drag racing. It certainly will add stress to throwout bearing...but i never ride the clutch on my Road Stars and dont keep it pulled in at lights. Ive never had a problem so far. If it does hurt the throwout bearing ill then upgrade to Barnett (and post any issues/failures). I like the atuff clutch knowing it aint never gonna slip again.

But I dont mind tearing stuff apart...if i didnt have time/area/tools ornhad to pay someone I would prob have done the Barnett with half HD springs.
