  • Slow cranking on startup

    My bike cranks over really slow.
    charged battery and was at 13.4 and after 12 hours was still at 13.3 volts. Cleaned connections on battery and checked to see if decompression spoon working and was ok.
    it still starts ok and previous owner said it had already had a new starter motor( and bare in mind it’s only done 8,500 miles )
    I did think about getting an Odessy battery as I had one on my Guzzi and it completely changed the startups.
    Going to check the starter relay first and work my way along.
    I’ve read so many posts on this subject my head is buzzing

    Is the starter a factory OEM Yamaha piece? Remove starter and cap...dump out black brush material, clean it out good, polish commutator. Install 4 gauge power/ground wire from Dave Jenkins. Make sure battery connections are tight.

    what voltage does battery drop to WHILE cranking? Does it dip below 10 volts? If so battery is bad. Resting voltage doesn't tell much.

      And, put a dab of grease in the end cap bearing cup.

    Check the metal tab inside the starter that connects the brushes is not broken at the 90 degree bends.

      Is that replacement starter an OEM or aftermarket. Several complaints have been lodged within these pages of substandard aftermarket starters.

        I have 4ga cables made and ready to ship for $45 shipped in the U.S.
        It's not the starter relay. The relay either works or it don't it won't make it crank slow. Check the battery voltage as you are cranking it, it should stay above 9.5v-10v. Anything below that and the battery is bad. you can bring it to the auto part store and have them load test it also.

          Viscosity of oil will make a big difference. I had that issue with 20-50 oil and changed to 10 - 40 because I live in the Pacific Northwest where it's not real hot.

            Thanks for the replies guys, oil wise it is 10/40 and soon to be replaced. Starter motor wise , I’m not sure but was done by a dealer so hopefully oem. Not had a chance to remove it yet as I have too many jobs to catch up on before I mess with it ( or so the wife says lol ) I’ll try the drop test on the battery as it’s an easy quick check

              Right then, start motor out and back plate off. One stuck brush later and a quick clean. Started a lot better . Commutator only had one segment that showed signs of arcing and no more than 10% of that one segment so hopefully should be ok

                why was the brush stuck? are they worn out?

                  Think it’s down to standing for a long time, bikes a 2002 and it only had 8,500 miles on it when I brought it plus in was used as a winter bike in the UK which means loads of salt damage. When the isolation ends and we can ride I,ll give it a couple of hundred miles and check it.
