  • Clutch adjustment

What is the proper steps to adjust the clutch after installing new spring and new clutch cable. The main question is about the arm on the crankcase. If I adjust the main adjustment on the cable (the one that is in the middle of the cable, it allows the arm on the crankcase to move. Should that be adjusted out as far as will go, them adjust for free play. I am wondering if the clutch if fully engaging/disengaging?

The arm at the end of the cable should retract all the way. The arm should be bolted to the shaft so when the clutch lever is released the angle of the cable to the arm is as close to 90 degrees as when the clutch lever is pulled all the way in. ie 92 degrees in one position and 88 degrees in the other. There should be about a nickels thickness space between the clutch lever and the perch when the engine is warm and the lever is released.

Shores, I just adjusted the middle clutch adjuster to allow for the lower crankcase arm to retract as far as it would then adjusted the lever to the proper gap. The crankcase arm is now at a 90 with the cable when pulled all the way in. Took a test drive and seems to be fine. After I replaced the clutch spring is has slipped a little and the bike felt like it was dragging after pulling in the clutch to roll to a stop. The dragging felt like it went away. Not a long enough ride to tell about the slipping. Does this sound about right to you? How important is the arm being at a 90 when being released vs at a 90 when pulled in? Thanks for the help!

May take a while for things to settle in. The new cable may stretch some so frequent adjustment may be needed. Sounds like your in the ball park. I adjust my arm to shaft angle so it is the same on both sides of 90 degrees for maximum excursion. Basic physics/geometry.
