  • Clutch spring

How much oil will I lose if I remove the clutch cover if I don't drain the oil? I'll have it level on a jack.

  • #2
DK, but an easy way is to drain the two quarts from the engine into a clean container and then pour it back in when the clutch is done. The two courts that are in the oil tank will stay there.

Or keep it on the side stand when you open it up and lose no oil.

Keep it on the kickstand and you'll loose a few drops (let it set overnight unmoved)

Prop the bike up straight and you shouldn't have much oil loss at all. A jack stand is best, otherwise a block of wood or brick under the kickstand will do. Just be very careful.

How fresh is your oil? Its like 40 bucks for fresh oil. Just put in new oil or wait til your oil change to swap out spring.

Just changed the oil a few hundred miles ago. It has started slipping in 4th gear if I throttle it hard (got 33k on it). Just didn't want to damaged anything by riding till next oil change? Question: If I left it on the kickstand i would think I would lose more oil. The clutch cover is on the left side? That's why I stated that it would be level on the jack?

I have done a few clutches and a couple of them were shortly after a oil change I just drained the crankcase into a clean drain pan and poured that oil back into the engine. You will have to use a drain pan and rags under the engine anyway because you "ARE" gonna have oil leak and drip the whole length of the clutch cover anyway. May as well clean the drain pan and reuse the oil.

Is number 26 needed when replacing the Spring Plate? There is also a new part number for the bolts (#28) should they be replaced? Thanks!

Just pulled my oem spring and replaced with barnetts. The clutch kit did not come with new bolts. Mine were in good shape when I pulled though. Couldnt hurt to order fresh, but I imagine you could reuse old.

No insight on 26. I used a different spring.

If you are thinking your going to lose oil, pull the oil before you pull the cover. Like Shores Said.

The wear-ring and the 6 bolts should be replaced according to the book, but if the ring looks good, a lot of us has reused that ring and bolts.

You mentioned that you have just changed the oil, and after a few hundred miles the clutch started slipping.
This leads me to ask you, what oil did you use when you changed the oil?

What spring did you buy a EBC or OEM?

Duke, it's been slipping for awhile. It's raining here for a few days so I thought I would fix it now! I drained the oil and removed clutch cable, shifter and black cover. But I can not get the chrome cover to come off. I have removed ALL the bolts. I made a template from the gasket to hold all the bolts. How much force should be used to get it off? Any ideas?

If all the bolts are out use a rubber mallet on it and it should come off. There are a few dowels holding it on that need to be freed up. Did you get the bolt on the front bottom behind the kickstand switch?

Yes got all the bolt off. I've taken the shifter mechanism off since I took that pic

Do what Dave said, just make sure all of the Allen bolts are removed. If the cover has been on there for along time, the gasket will hold it on fairly tight. There is a couple spots on the cover that you can wedge on.
I would suggest using the Barnett clutch pressure plate, although it is about twice the cost of a diaphragm spring.

Be patient on taking off the old gasket on the cover. You can even use paint stripper to remove. The gasket was the most time consuming task of it all. I would suggest changing out that #26 gasket in that parts diagram if you are going with another diaphragm spring. There were reports of new spring slipping shortly or low mileage after. I do believe the Clymer manual states for it to be changed along with the spring.

Since these bolts for the spring plate and the clutch cover are so lightly torqued, should I use blue loctite?

It doesnt ask for it but I cannot see it hurt anything. The Barnett plate conversion that I installed did not ask to apply loctite.
