  • What oil do Canadians use?

Just recently picked up a '99 Roadstar and was looking to change out all the fluids. After reading the thread with all that great info for people new to the Roadstar, I started trying to source the recommended oils from local and online suppliers (I'm near Toronto, Canada) and have been having trouble finding any of the oils on the list with the suitable amount of zinc.

So I'm wondering, what oil other Canadians are using, and where they are getting it from?

    Thanks!

Maxima and Bel-Ray for V-twins are available at my local shop, anyone have any experience with either of those?
Either way, I'm on the hunt for someone with Amsoil locally.

        Thanks for the fast response!

I use ams oil. Oorps has it in stock always, they are just off Leslie st in newmarket. My buddy had a amsoil supplier that shipped to my house but oorps was cheaper anyway. They also have the pretty chrome knn oil filter in stock for our bikes every time I have gone in.

Maxima Synthetic V-twin 20W50 works. Same for Maxima Pro Plus Synthetic 10W40 or 20W50. I called the company earlier this year and was told that these 3 oils have 1350 ppm zinc so all 3 are good for Road Stars.

Be sure to only put 4 quarts in it, no more. And there's a specific procedure to fill the oil tank. If you have not read about it already, search it on this site before you do anything, otherwise you'll have a big mess on your hands. There's also 2 plugs that need to be drained and the front one is a PITA to get to.

Was using Yamalube but have read that zinc amounts have been lowered so have switched to Amsoil 10w40 Metric for wet clutches. I live in New Brunswick.

Royal Distributing in Barrie or Whitby carry Amsoil. I use the 10W40 for metric bikes in mine.

Yea, IF the 10-year old white paper on bike oils is even still relevant anymore, the Amsoil product did test best. And, what FPB said totally applies! There are 2 drain plugs. Find, and pull, both. Fill through the fill tube under the seat, but only 2 qts at a time. Add 2, run it for about 30 seconds, with maybe a throttle blip or 2, and then, add the other 2... NO more than 4qts. After that, you're good to go. Unless you know you are leaking, or burning, no need to ever check the level between changes, IF you must, there is a specific protocol you need to follow in order to get anything like a useful reading on the stick. AND, finally, if checking, and doing it correctly, if there is oil on the stick ANWHERE within the crosshatch pattern on it... you're good! Do not add any, as if to top it up. That would be a mistake, and you will be overfilling your bike.

Finally... never, ever, under ANY circumstance, start your bike with the oil dipstick out. Don't ask me how I learned this eternal verity...

In Vancouver, BC I’ve been using Motul 20W50 100%Synthetic. At $90/4l it better be the good stuff. Was the recommended choice from both the Yamaha dealer and my fave shop Modern Motorcycle.

Lol, the only place in Canada you can ride your bike in winter, don't forget your rain gear although some winters are better than others even in Ontario.
