  • too much oil??

Started a valve adjustment procedure on my 04 road star following the instructions of the service manual. When I removed the timing mark plug and crankshaft nut plug 1/2 a quart of oil came spewing out. The manual made absolutely no mention of draining the oil before starting the work. So is oil suppose to be in this case?? Im use to extremely detailed instructions from my time as a jet mechanic so this could have been a lack of motorcycle common knowledge on my part lol. Just wanted to check with you guys.

1 gallon is all it needs, not a drop more. It sure sounds like its overfull.

I’ve only had this bike a few weeks now and keep running into issues the PO did wrong. My assumption was correct then. That much oil should not have been there.

I’ve read these are dry sump motors. What does that mean?

Semi dry sump. Dry sump engines store all their oil in a separate tank and a scavenger pump in the bottom of the engine immediately sucks any oil that drips from the moving parts and returns it to the oil tank and the process repeats.

Semi dry oil systems stores some oil in the the crankcase while returning the rest of it back to the oil tank.

These engines are tall and to shorten the height they have a more shallow ‘oil pan’ at the bottom of the engine.

          Thanks for that explanation bikerron!

Good explanation bikerron. I think that also has to do with why the dipstick is unreliable. I've heard RS owners ask about no oil on the dipstick and it's not hard to imagine this leading people to add a quart or more.

That's for sure...first day I had mine, when I checked the oil ( after I figured out how to remove the seat ) there was almost none on the stick, so, naturally, I added a quart. After the air filter started dripping oil (!) I found out what happens when you overfill the oil. I'm an old school H-D guy so I was used to constantly adding oil, then I come to read on here about the correct procedure for checking oil. Knowledge is power.

When you acquire one of these, and there's any question or doubt... there's only one answer. Drain it all, from both plugs, and refill with 4 qts only... 2 at a time, with a 30 second run in between them, with a blip or two on the throttle... then add the second 2. When you've only added 4 qts to refill, you know you've got the right amount!

Don't forget to replace the dipstick after adding the 2nd qt *Before* you start the engine... Orrrr, you'll get an oil bath.

I imagine that’s what happened here with the PO. This oil is in addition to the stuff that already came gushing out onto my floor.

Wrong Hole, Whitty. The one you want is below that.
Bottom left, behind the lower frame member.

Im not trying to drain the oil lol. I stated in my original post that I was attempting a valve adjustment and when I removed the plugs to see the timing mark and crankshaft nut I got an oil waterfall surprise. I had asked if this much oil is suppose to be in there because in the service manual it mentions nothing about draining the oil first.

                What manual are you using?

In my Factory Service Manual the first thing it states is to get the bike level. Was it?

A xv1700 service manual PDF I found online. Mine doesnt make any mention of that but yes I leveled it with some wood under the kickstand.

Just so you'll know if you do it again it is not necessary to remove those plugs. Remove the valve covers and rotate the engine with the rear wheel and when the valves are closed you'll be able to twist the pushrods with your fingers. All that's necessary to adjust the valves is that the valves be closed. I guess Yamaha had to write it up proper without realizing there was a much easier way.

I'm fairly sure that your motor is overfilled with oil. I've never seen oil that high in the engine.
Does the dip stick show any oil? If it does, you might want to pull both oil plugs and measure the amount of oil drained. It should be around a little more than 4 quarts total.

Yeah, oil shows about 1/4inch on the bottom of the dipstick. Im sure it was higher before all the oil came out of this plug. I was going to drain the oil after I fixed the SVS but I may do the oil first and see how it runs.

My roadstar in new to me, but I saw somewhere after a ride let it ideal for 30 seconds, then check.. Am I correct?

Yes, but no need to do that unless it leaks oil. These bikes don’t consume oil. Four in, four out. Never check.

Oil is good on this, just saying what I heard on how to check it without a false reading!
