    I'm sure it's gear oil change time, I'm not sure if previous ever did it, and was thinking of checking the clutch plates and Barnet conversion while I'm in there, check my drive pulley nut, and I'm sure my neck bearing isn't right, it's loose asf, today I noticed it more than usual. I'm thinking of tackling that first. Can they be tightened? I'm going to inspect, what are some signs to look for that indicate replacing is the only option? Over the years, ya'll get the same questions, I'm guilty of being too lazy to look through the years of comments, lol. TIA!

    So many questions .
    Not a problem, they will get answered.
    You said you want to check your neck bearings first?
    You will need a bike jack or a *stable* way to get the front wheel off the ground.

    Do a search here for "the flop test".

      I made my own lift out of some 3/4 black iron I had laying around, thanks for the YouTube links, it failed the flop test, lol.

      Just fyi, my flop test went perfect even though the bottom bearing was toast.

        Did you have play at all in the neck? I have no movement in the neck area, but it did fail the flop test.

      Maybe I misunderstood but gear oil is changed from the right side of the bike seperate and total opposite of the clutch on the left. Gear oil has a little plug to remove oil and larger plug to add. I cannot remember a specific quantity of oil.

        I haven't checked the drive pulley nut yet, which is on the same side and a close neighbor to the clutch. I'm also due for an oil change, and I did leave that out in op. ;-)

      I think the flop test is not 100% reliable, if you think about it when the wheel is off the ground all the weight is resting on the upper bearing. Mine did good on the flop test and i had no play in the forks. My only symptom was the steering felt like it was sticking at low speeds. This is what my lower bearing looked like

        Had the same issue last summer. The steering binds on slow turns. No head shake at all.

        yeah, its gonna act different under a load. if it lays over easy in a turn, it needs to be snugged, flop test is unreliable IMHO

          A lose bearing is always better than an overtightened one, the roadstar is so heavy i believe that's what kills the neck bearings especially the lower one, when you hit a bump theres a lot of weight on the lower one, mine looked just like his Click image for larger version

            The real issue is, was, the factory in Japan barley put any grease in the new bikes they shipped and then told us in the manual to repack them every 16,000 miles or 2 years, many never made it to the first service interval without sustaining damage. This condition was accelerated for those that got little grease from the factory and left their ride outside in the weather. Assuming that the engineers at Yamaha were incompetent in their trade would not be substantiated by anyone that has owned one of these beautiful reliable bikes. The bean counters are mostly to blame for the bikes shortcomings so us cheap bastards would buy it over a H.D.

            If this helps someone this kit fit my 06 Roadstar Midnight 1700. “All Balls Racing” # 22-1004 on Amazon or corporate site. Only attempt this yourself if you are confident and experienced in tapered roller bearing and spindle repairs. If not have a qualified tech do it. There is no price on safety!
