  • Oil in, oil out?

    My 08 fuelie has 52K miles. I just changed my Mobile 1 10-40 synthetic MC oil at 5K miles. I put four quarts in last time and could only get 3.25 out today. It’s not leaking...must be burning it. Should I be concerned?

    I never get more than 3 qts back either.
    Not sure if We should be concerned. But I Do try to check the level
    every so often to make sure it doesn't get Too low.

      Doesn't the oil filter hold some of the oil in it so you'll never get out what you put in?

        Oil filter holds quite a bit did you drain that properly? Also there's going to be a loyal trapped in the filter media that you cannot get out I would say 3 and 1/4 quarts plus the oil filter is about right for four quarts. I don't think he's motors burn much oil at all.

          Duh! You’re right! I didn’t think of the filter. I drained most out of it, but like you say, the element will retain some.

              Oil left in filter....oil in drain pan that doesn't come out easily....I would try changing oil at 3k or 4k just to see if you get a different amount next time.

                I had a similar, and weird, experience this spring. First time I ever measured what came out... Got little more than 3 qts from the first; but filled the jug right to the very top, 4 qts. plus, from the second bike, and I KNOW I only pour in from out of 1 4qt jug the spring before.... I'm going to have to keep that bike... By golly, IT MAKES OIL!!!

                  Bear in mind, you also have “cook off” of the base stocks at the exhaust side of the heads on a constant basis, where the oil is evaporated and goes out the vent. Can’t be avoided, especially on air cooled engines. You lose around 10% of your volume right there, even with the high thermal stability of synthetic base stocks. There is ALWAYS some cook off at the cylinder wall to oil ring as well. I wouldn’t be concerned.
