  • Rear Sprocket Stud Missing

I need some advice from fellow riders. My 2004 Yamaha Midnight Road Star lost a stud on the rear sprocket somehow, I need to know if it would be safe to continue to ride for a couple weeks until I'm paid and can take it to my mechanic. It is my only form of transportation right now and a ride sharing service is getting too pricey. Thanks.

Raodiemort I believe the inside of the sprocket hole for that specific Stud may be stripped as I've had issues with it being loose before. Unless I'd be able to slap a bigger stud in and that would fix it?

Can the stud be torqued? If so add blue loc-tite insert new stud. Should be good.

First off, I would be a little hesitant to ride the bike like that. Maybe if I was limping the bike home where I could address the issue but definitely wouldn't attempt to ride it like that for a couple of weeks. I don't know what your mechanical skills are, but it would be well worth it to remove the wheel and get it to someone who can get a new stud installed properly. With you doing the work of removing and installing the wheel, it shouldn't cost very much to have someone install a new stud correctly. Take a bunch of pictures as you remove the wheel to aid in installing it after the repair. You will be glad you did.

I don't understand how a stud could back out with out hitting the cradle swing arm tubes. If it were to back out far enough, then I would think that it would lock up the wheel, or shear off that stud. You would know that it happened for sure.

Couldn't agree more and was going to say something about that in my last post but, after thinking about it, you just never know what the existing or PO of the bike did to it for maintenance on it. Over the years working on OPM (other peolple's motorcycles), I have heard myself say "what the?, How the,?, Who the? more times than I can remember. It's the "you've got to be kidding me's" that get to me the most. I won't even go into the endless possibilities that cause most issues, let alone those that have no idea it even happened.
