  • Checking the oil

Recently done an oil change on my 2007 1700 R* I ride 15 mins. Let it idle for 30 sec. Cut it off . Wait 30 secs . And still the oil reads high . I put exactly 4 qts of Mobil 1 in . What am I doing wrong. It's so hard to get an accurate oil reading. I've checked it 5 times .bits never the same . Any help would be appreciated for sure . For the record I think the oil level is fine ...just I'm not checking it right .

Did you drain both drain plugs....letting it drank for at least 30 min? Stand bike up straight (using 2x4 wood under kickstand to get it about level to ensure draining)? Did you change filter and let that area drank as well?

if you did all this then add 4 quarts total your fine. Don't check the oil....change oil/filter every 4k-5k miles (assuming synthetic) and ride. Never check oil level.....these things don't use or leak oil (unless a small leak like around shift shaft area or if you didn't replace drain plug crush washers OR if you ripped off a factory original gasket and didn't do a good job of scraping/cleaning before replacing). ....

I have owned a 1600 Roadie for 8 years now and checked the oil using the dip stick method a couple of times during the first few months. There did not seem to be any accuracy in doing it that way.

For the last 7 years I listened to the knowledgeable folks on this forum and drained the old oil properly from both locations. Add 4 qts (only) of Mobil One 20w50 V Twin oil with the new filter at the correct interval and ride it until the next time.

Why do you feel the need to check the oil on a Roadstar? They don’t leak or use oil. Put 4 in, drain 4 out, put 4 in, drain 4 out............

After riding, or a good warm up, let the bike set for at least 30 minutes, then check the oil with the bike level. I think that's what Yamaha suggests.

Nope....it a stupid long complicated procedure that doesn't make sense. MUCH better to not check it.....

If I'm feeling especially anal (maybe twice a year when I have the seat off anyway) and want to check the oil, I just do it in the morning before I ride and while it's on the kickstand. If any oil shows up on the stick, I'm good to go. My guess is that it could be a quart low in the reservoir and it wouldn't matter. The oil for the engine doesn't suck out from the top anyway.

Actually the feed pump gets its oil exclusively from the tank. The return pump can return oil to the tank faster than the feed pump can use it which is why the oil level reads higher once the engine gets good and warm.

You could check it 10 times and get 10 different readings. If you drained both plugs and added 4 quarts, you are golden. Pay no heed to the dipstick.

Say you check your oil one afternoon per the video instructions. The next morning before starting the bike you check the oil level cold, make a note of the oil level on the dip stick. Could you not use that as a cold oil level benchmark to go by when the engine is cold?

Not sure. I have two bikes, and if I let them sit for a few days one bike shows lower oil level. Like oil from the tank slowly drains from the tank to the case. Oil pump check valve should stop this from happening???

4 qts out, 4 qts in. Ride 2-3,000 miles. Repeat. It's been working since 2002 on my bike..

Check oil? I thought my RS came with oil already in it. If I have to start checking the oil, I'm gonna move over to a Harley, They are easy to check. If they ain't leaking, there's no oil in'em.

I never, ever check mine, because I remembered how much I put in it the last oil change. It’s still in there, too.
