  • What’s Your Favorite Battery Maintainer

I’m in the market for the above listed item, what is everyone’s favorite make/model and why?

    Thanks
    2012 Road Star Silverado S

Harbor freight float chargers are about $6. I use them on everything I have that is seasonal equipment with a battery. I have never had a fail. They are a maintainer not a charger meaning the battery needs to be charged when you hook it up and it will maintain that charge.

Because it was on sale and I needed one. Has worked great for many years.

        What Davej said.

What ever you get just be sure it has a ‘float’ feature. Trickle chargers, tho they have a low output current, will not regulate the current and cook a battery if left on too long.

The float setting will sent just enough to the battery to keep it @ peak charge and once reached, stop charging.

Good to know about the float feature.

I picked up a small viking charger from HF but haven't tried it yet. It says it has a maintenance mode on it that can be left on during the winter. I guess we will see ............

I have a simple Battery Tender [Automatic] that I got from the PO of my first R*. It's a trickle charger, so nothing fancy, but it gets the job done and does have an automatic Float setting. You can find them for around $35.

Ive had the same one as Doc_V for 2 or 3 years now. When there is a possibility of riding I will plug it up a day or so ahead of time. Otherwise it stays in the shed out back on top of a couple of boxes. I only have positive things to say about this one. It does the job very well.

Bought one of those chargers back in ‘09. Parked the bike and headed back to my job overseas. 2 years later I hoped on my R and she fired right up! I have one for my mower as well.

I used the Harbor Freight Model for a couple years without much problem. I switched to the Battery Tender brand like mentioned above for the simple accessories available with or for it. The most handy for me is the USB adapter to stick a phone charger in going down the road. I ran a cheap USB cable up the backbone to the handle bars where my phone mount is. I like having the pigtail always mounted on the battery where you just have to plug into it. Can switch from charger to USB with a quick replug under the seat. Even was able to jump Phil's bike at a M&G with the plug in jumper cables that fit easily in a sandwich bag. fwiw

+1 on the Battery Tender. Have had the same one 10+ years.

I have two Scumachers - this one's my latest. It'll charge @ 3A, or float maintain. I use them on the motorcycles as well as the motor home. Installing pigtails on all your vehicles is the way to go..

That looks nice, I like that it’s 6 volt also since I just got a project bike that is 6v

Like another one or two said... The incredibly low-cost Harbor Freight Tools floating chargers, for like $6, work just fine... been using 3 or more at a time for years, over the winter on my R*s. I give them as gifts to friends!

I use a 30.00 battery tender and a 6.00 harbor freight one. The 30.00 one is of sturdier construction, but the 6.00 one does the same job.

If I had known about the Harbor Freight one before I spent $30 on my Battery Tender, I would have bought two of them.

My Batttery Tender Plus is 20 years old and does a fine job. I also have the Shumacher unit from Wal-Mart that works well. It's only about 5 years old. Both are "float" style maintainers and never give me any cause to not trust them.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

That’s amazing you’ve gotten 20 yrs of service out of the charger, it seems it’s rare nowadays. Cheers

Thanks everyone for their comments! Since I happened to be at HF today and this seemed like best bang for the buck I got this, time will tell if it’s any good or not. 6 & 12 volt, AGM, Gel, standard, regular and maintenance charge, LCD read out. It says car charger but it comes with the “battery tender” type plug to install on your bike battery...

D-Fresh that should work fine. It has the float mode and the pig tail is great for a quick hook up.

I use a Schumacher Automatic Maintainer, 1.5amp with Float Mode. I pull my Bike and Mower batteries and hook them in parallel through the winter. This one has done the job for 5 yrs and keeps on ticking. Wallyworld purchase $13.00
