  • Steering neck bearing nut tool

Ok, after reading a few threads on the steering flop test; I tested mine and it does not pass. Really bounces on the stops both sides.
    Questions:
1- For those who did re-torque the steering stem, where did you get the ring nut wrench?
2- I have a 2005 Midnight Silverado with fairing, this means I will have to remove the fairing and the original windshield bracket to be able to remove the triple tree? Correct?

    Thanks for your input

    I purchased mine from Amazon

If you are going to remove the fairing and etc, I would just go ahead and break it down to the stem. Clean, inspect and repack your stem bearings. Not that hard to do.

You can also do fine adjustments by just loosening and raising the top tree and turning the nut with a screwdriver and hammer.

be careful not to damage it , i would use a long ass punch rather that a screwdriver, and repacking that bearing aint that easy, cuz you have to do top and bottom bearing, bottom one you have to lower the front end to access, unless somebodys got a secret, some of us have put zircs on em

Definitely want to at least check the bearings. If you’re like me, once you drop that front end you’ll think about what a great time it is to change the fork oil. Mine was a 2006 and I ended up having to replaced the bearings due to wear. They’re cheap enough to replace. The tool is also pretty cheap through amazon. Dry bearings can wear and cause steering grind or lock up which can be catastrophic. Way cheaper to repack or replace the bearings than a funeral.

But Yamaha service manual calls for a YU33975 special tool which if you look on ebay, costs around $20-30 plus shipping
