Something in the rear making a popping noise when rolling backwards.

I have a 99 and a 02 that started that sound. It was as Dave said the wheel bearing was loose in the wheel housing on both..

Saturday taking it to a Yamaha shop. He can't fit me in for two weeks, but he said he'd listen to it and let me know what he thinks.

I'm with davej that exhaust bracket looks a tad askew although has nothing to do with the sound. May not be loose but looks crooked? Could be the camera angle?

The mechanic was baffled. He said it doesn't really sound like a bad bearing, but the sound was definitely in the hub. So I changed the bearings and the sound is gone.

I had to bang on them all pretty good. And the new ones also required hammering in. I used the old bearings when possible as the driver.

Bearings in the freezer for 4-5 hours. Used a heat gun on the hub where applicable.

That is a good sign that it was just the bearing that was bad and not the hub. Good to hear it is back on the road.

Congrats! MIne was obvious when I pulled the wheel off the bearing fell out in the floor on both bikes.

None of the bearings looked bad. They all felt smooth as well. Except the one. In getting it out, I sort of messed up the plastic seal and it was pushed into the race. So that one is hard to tell if it felt ok, because the seal was rubbing. There also weren't any score marks on any of the spacers.

I always remove the plastic seal that is on a sealed bearing with a small screwdriver or pick and put a little extra grease in the bearing then snap the seal back into place. You would be surprised at how many bearing come from the factory with very little grease in them.
